Everyone has a favourite superhero or villain, but not all superheroes and villains have hit the big time.
We caught up with some of our amazingly talented Comic Creators at Supanova in Melbourne and on the Gold Coast to figure out who deserves the spotlight.
Jon Sommarvia
Scud: The Disposable Assassin
“I’d say Scud: The Disposable Assassin. He’s a very underrated hero and most people probably haven’t heard of him now because that story came out so long ago, but I love the style and it’s a really cool concept. He’s a robot and someone bought him from a vending machine to kill someone, but he’s about to kill the person and notices in a mirror a little sticker on his back that says as soon as he completes his mission he’ll self-destruct.”
Morrigan Moore
The Condiment King
“If you can step up to Batman with nothing but a mustard gun and a ketchup gun, you’re a badass.”
Al Barrionuevo
Steel
“Steel from DC Comics. I really love that character because it’s very ‘90s.”
Gary Proudley
Hellboy
“People forget he’s a superhero and there are some great stories out there by [creator Mike] Mignola that have not been read by enough people.”
Campbell Whyte
Jubilee (X-Men)
“For me, it’s always the ’90s Jubilee, the animated series-era Jubilee, with the yellow trench coat.”
Dean Rankine
Jubilee (X-Men)
“She can do energy blasts from her hands, makes explosions and she has a cool fashion sense.”
Jamie Johnson
She-Ra
“You can’t fight crime wearing all that gold and not be considered the best superhero of all time.”
Khale McHurst
Patsy Walker (Hellcat)
“I like the comic because it’s very queer-positive – it has a lot of queer characters in it and they just talk and act like normal people.”
Andrew Constant
Etrigan the Demon
“I worked on him, Etrigan the Demon. I think he is great. I think he is a real evil a**hole which I love in my characters. Etrigan is my guy, he has always been my guy and I’ll jam him till the day I die.”
Nicola Scott
Robin
“He is never included in the movies, except for the really bad ones. Robin is a really significant character, and of all the Robins, my favourite Robin is Tim Drake. I think he is the quintessential Robin because he wants to be Robin, he campaigns to be Robin, he is a mini-batman, he is really smart and a good kid. For about 10 years now he has been really underserved and needs way more spotlight.”
Tom Taylor
Gabby Kinney
“It is impossible to choose just one because there are too many underrated superheroes – Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Guy Gardener. I would say Gabby Kinney because I created her, and she was an X-Men. I could go on forever and I think you actually want me to, but there is a whole lot of underrated characters that should be used a lot more.”
