Get ready to equip your proton packs and charge those neutrona wands, Supa-Fans, because this April there’ll be something strange in the neighbourhood when OG Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson makes his way down under for Supanova on the Gold Coast (11-12 April 2026) and in Melbourne (18-19 April 2026).
Hudson first stepped into the role of Winston Zeddemore in 1984 for a film that would go on to become a pop culture behemoth that continues to thrill and delight audiences more than 40 years later.
With 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire revealing that Hudson’s Winston went on to become a wealthy businessman with a mindset toward expanding the Ghostbusters brand well beyond its original Firehouse, the stage is now set for many more spooktacular outings to come.
However, the question remains, exactly what spectral form will these next chapters in the Ghostbusters franchise take? Ahead of Hudson’s Supanova appearance, we took a peek at Tobin’s Spirit Guide and sought the answers about what’s next for New York’s beloved paranormal investigators and eliminators.
Untitled ‘Ghostbusters’ Animated Series
Set to be helmed by Star Trek: Prodigy’s Ben Hibon and intended to be released on Netflix, plans for a new animated Ghostbusters series were first announced back in 2022 as a collaborative effort between the streaming giant, Ghost Corps and Sony Animation.
While precise story details surrounding the new series are scarce, it has been revealed that the series will cover a previously unseen era in the franchise canon and introduce a whole new group of characters. However, in June last year, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Netflix’s Director of Original Animation, Dominique Bazay, shared some concept art that pointed toward a gritty-looking New York City, hinting at the show’s return to the Big Apple.
It is also unclear whether fans might expect to see some more familiar voices pop up in the new series, but Hudson himself has expressed his willingness to reprise his role, especially given that his character was famously recast for the 1986 animated series, The Real Ghostbusters.
Back in a 2024 interview with ComingSoon.net, Hudson revealed that he even pleaded directly with franchise steward Jason Reitman (son of the late Ivan Reitman and director of Ghostbusters: Afterlife) to voice the character if he does indeed make an appearance.
“I told Jason, ‘Don’t ever let anybody do Winston’s voice unless I’m gone. Like, gone for real,’” he explained. “I love doing voice-over work, and I’d be very heartbroken if anyone voiced Winston from this point moving forward.”
At this stage, there is no clear indication when Netflix is planning to release the show, but it was reported that official production got underway in June last year, and rumours of multiple-season plans circulated shortly thereafter.

Plans For ‘Ghostbusters 6’
While the franchise’s immediate future seems to be headed to the small screen, Ghostbusters veteran Dan Aykroyd has assured fans that there will indeed be a sixth movie, and it is currently in the very early stages of development.
During an appearance on the Talking Strange podcast in October last year, Aykroyd revealed that “Jason [Reitman] is working with the creative crew there at Ghost Corps out there in Los Angeles. And I’ll be very interested to see what emerges.”
However, it is unclear whether this next movie will continue the new generation of Ghostbusters featuring Mckenna Grace’s Phoebe Spengler, or look to embrace another whole new set of characters altogether (or even the potential return of the 2016 reboot’s cast).
Though Ackroyd has previously stated that he doesn’t see either himself or Bill Murray returning for another movie, and that it is probably time “to move on to advancing it beyond the originals”.
Hudson, however, remains perfectly positioned to continue as the remaining connective tissue to the franchise’s past, as the in-universe financier behind the Ghostbuster brand. And from his own words, he’s not content to merely have Winston sit on the sidelines. Speaking with ScreenRant, the OG Ghostbuster suggested he’s more than keen to strap on another proton pack.
“I want to see Winston sort of head the teams right now,” he explained. “I think the studio is focused on the [Spengler] family, which is a good thing, but I also would like to see Winston take a team and spin-off in other directions. That would be a lot of fun.
“They talk about retirement, but I don’t want him to just be that guy who sits in the office. I’d love to see him, like in the original films, really get down and dirty and go at it.”
Whether Hudson will get his wish remains to be seen, but the groundwork has already been laid for other Ghostbusters teams reporting up to Zeddemore in other locations, while the Spenglers continue to work from the infamous New York firehouse.
In the meantime, Supa-Fans will know exactly who they’re gonna call when Ernie Hudson joins us for Supanova on the Gold Coast (11-12 April 2026) and in Melbourne (18-19 April 2026).
