Grab your detective fit and your trusty sidekick, because the tales you know are only half of the story! This week, the animated series, The Sisters Grimm, is coming to Apple TV+! To celebrate the upcoming TV show, we’re going to have a look at the original beloved book series and its origins, as well as explore the massive amount of talent involved in the adaptation.
In the series, orphaned sisters Sabrina and Daphne Grimm navigate the town of Ferryport Landing, full of people and characters torn straight from fantasy books and fairy tales. Discovering they’re descendants of the Brothers Grimm, the sisters confront heroes and villains while investigating the mystery of their missing parents. Much like the book series, The Sisters Grimm animated series blends discovery, fantasy and adventure to deliver important lessons for all ages.
Based on the New York Times bestseller book series, The Sisters Grimm was written by Michael Buckley. The children’s fantasy series was inspired by the adventures of Grimms’ Fairy Tales, created by German authors Jacob and Wilhelm, known as the Brothers Grimm. Buckley also wrote another book series, N.E.R.D.S, and was the showrunner of the sci-fi animated series Robotomy, which ran on Cartoon Network across 2010 and 2011.
In Buckley’s nine-part book series, the Grimm sisters meet and go up against all sorts of famous fairy tale characters, known as Everafters. Just to name a few of the cameos that make their way into the books, the sisters meet Snow White, Cinderella, Puss in Boots, the Jabberwocky and the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Rumpelstiltskin, and Little Red Riding Hood. The girls also come across their main archnemesis, The Master, who is also connected with the Scarlet Hand, a group of evil Everafters.
It’ll be interesting to see which characters will appear in the TV series. Based on the trailer, it looks like there are allusions to characters like Humpty Dumpty and basic magical creatures like trolls, giants and fairies. Either way, it should make for an engaging series of adventures for the Grimm girls to explore mysteries with the fantasy backdrop across the Fairyport Landing town.
The series adaptation features a stellar voice cast, including Ariel Winter leading the six-part adventure as Sabrina. Winter is not only known for playing Alex in Modern Family, but she also has quite a diverse range of animated voice acting roles. Such TV shows include Sofia the First, Young Justice, Phineas and Ferb and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Joining Winter as the second half of the titular sisters is Leah Newman as Daphne. Newman has mostly been involved in choir ensembles of various movies and TV shows, including Peter Pan & Wendy, Arcane and The Boys.
Joining Winter and Newman is Laraine Newman, known for Saturday Night Live, as Relda Grimm, the sisters’ grandmother. Abubakar Salim (Raised by Wolves) is also featured as Prince Charming, Billy Harris (Ted Lasso) as Puck, a trickster fairy boy, and Harry Trevaldwyn (How to Train Your Dragon) as Mirror.
The book adaptation is developed by Emmy Award nominee Amy Higgins, known for Star vs. the Forces of Evil, who also serves as the showrunner and executive producer. Author of the book series, Michael Buckley, joins the executive producer team. Emmy Award-winning studio Titmouse, known for Duck and Goose, Harriet the Spy, and Frog and Toad, created the animation.
The Sisters Grimm is arriving on Apple TV+ from Friday, October 3rd.
