If you love franchises such as Uncharted, Saints Row, Assassin’s Creed, and Deadpool, then you are familiar with the vast portfolio of Supa-Star Nolan North! Congoers were treated to his many voice impressions and stories at his Brisnova panel. With Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 releasing soon after the event, North teased what fans should expect from the much-anticipated Zombies mode, featuring his reprisal of Dr. Edward Richtofen.
“I’m not going to say anything, or they’ll take the money back,” he laughed. “As you know, the Black Ops 7 and the Zombies timeline is so screwed up that I don’t think I could tell you anything because I don’t understand it.”
Is there a role North wishes to reprise? “I hope I get to do more as Deadpool. I would love to do more with him.” The Merc with the Mouth is not the only Marvel character he has voiced. He reflected on his recent work on the PVP hit game, Marvel Rivals, as Rocket Raccoon. “It’s one of those games with a lot of straight lines.”
“I also voiced Rocket for the Guardians of the Galaxy Telltale game. And that was completely different from Rivals, it was very emotional because you learnt about Rocket’s backstory and how he was trying to save Lylla from the High Evolutionary. They wrote it so brilliantly. Rivals is just fun, you know, you just jump out, kick some ass, and…” North exclaimed as Rocket, “‘Enjoy the Amplifier!’ I love that I get to do that as Rocket!”
As mentioned in our interview with North prior to the show, he sees himself the most in Nathan Drake out of the characters he has played. This includes Drake’s fear of clowns, as North explained, “Clowns, nothing ever good happens with Clowns. They don’t really bring joy. I’ve always been afraid of clowns. My brother, who’s seven years older, we’re always been tight; he would take me to see movies that I should not have seen when I was very young. I didn’t like to swim when I was 5 or 6 because he took me to see Jaws. And then one day he’s like, ‘It’s just called It, don’t worry about it.
“So, when I finally met Tim Curry, I told Tim, ’My brother took me to see It at a very young age, and clowns to this day terrify me, your performance was amazing.’ He goes, ‘That’s right, yes… clowns… are… horrible.” And he wouldn’t stop staring at me. I now have that moment, forever.”
Airing from 2010 – 2013, Transformers: Prime featured a star-studded cast, including North as Smokescreen, and Transformers VA legends such as Frank Welker as Megaton and Supa-Star alum Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime. North was left feeling a little starstruck during production, as he recalled. “It was the best Wednesdays of my life for that period. We recorded our lines together, and I can recall where everybody sat in that room. There was David Sobolov, who’s here today at Supanova, Kevin Michael Richardson, Steve Blum, Frank Welker, and Peter Cullen, who was eight feet away from me. It was every Wednesday from 9am – 1pm.
“One of the first times I had my headphones on and my script, I said…” North channelled his vocal cords as Smokescreen, “‘What are we going to do, Optimus?’ And in my headphones, I hear Peter say, ‘Autobots roll- ‘, and as he was saying that, I uttered, ‘Ha ha.’ I ruined the tape because of my nervous laugh. Kevin came to me later and was like, ‘That happens to us all, man.’ It was a magical moment, and it was one of the best rooms I have ever been in because you’re literally there with your friends and legends, and legends who become your friends.”
