INTERVIEW: Graham McTavish On His Career & Love For Australia

Written by William Minazzo - April 2, 2026Daniel Cribb

Supa-Star Graham McTavish has built a reputation for strong and captivating performances across prolific franchises such as Outlander, The Hobbit Trilogy, and Castlevania.

Ahead of his appearances at Supanova Comic Con & Gaming on the Gold Coast (11-12 April 2026) and in Melbourne (18-19 April 2026), we caught up with the legend himself to discuss his amazing career that has spanned decades.

When did you realise Outlander has become a worldwide phenomenon?

It was gradual. It’s difficult to know or assess the reaction to a show when you’re in it; it acts like a bubble. Although I do remember being overwhelmed by the fan reaction in San Diego at the screening of the first episode. That was intense!

Do you have a favourite episode or moment from Outlander?

Many, many moments. The death of Geordie in Season 1. My scene with Gary Lewis as Colum when he’s dying is a great one for many reasons. That was both of our last scenes that we shot. The Rent episode in Season 1 was memorable because it was our first time on location. Lots of fun was had!

What inspired you to co-create and star in the Men in Kilts documentary series with fellow Outlander actor and Supa-Star alum Sam Heughan?

I’ve always been fascinated with Scottish history. I’d told Sam about it when we were filming, and years later, I was in my kitchen in New Zealand, and he rang and said, “Do you remember that idea you had? Shall we try and make it?” So, we shot a teaser trailer over five weekends and showed it to Starz. Next thing we knew, we were filming an unscripted travel show in a camper van in Scotland!

Given the strong Scottish influence on Australia’s history and culture, is Australia a possible filming location for a future season of Men in Kilts?

Definitely! I would love to travel to Australia with the show. I toured Australia in 1988 with a play I had written and saw every city from Perth to Darwin, Brisbane to Adelaide and everywhere in between. I’d love to go back.

What was your experience filming The Hobbit trilogy and bringing Dwalin to life?

It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as dwarves we bonded in such a unique way. That experience was filled with so many unforgettable moments. Dwalin is somewhat based on my father. Loving, loyal, but not to be trifled with.

You have many prolific voice acting credits, such as Dracula from Castlevania and Dante Alighieri from Dante’s Inferno. How does voice acting challenge you differently from on‑camera work?

To be honest, I treat them just the same. As an actor, you are there to bring a character to life in order to help share the story with an audience. You use your imagination to place yourself in that world. The main difference of course is that you don’t have a costume or sets to help with that!

Are there any projects you’re currently working on that you can share with us?

I’m excited to share a wonderful movie I shot in New Zealand in December called A Dog’s Show. It’s a great departure for me as I play a family man, a sheep farmer, dealing with life and showcasing New Zealand in a fabulous way. It comes out in October. I’m also working on something that I hope to announce very soon, plus taking a film to Cannes that I’m very passionate about called GUNN.

What are you most looking forward to at Supanova and why?

I love spending time in Australia, and I’ll be bringing my youngest daughter (13) to share the experience with. Plus, a chance to always catch up with old friends. They are always such happy experiences.

Meet Supa-Star Graham McTavish at Supanova Comic Con & Gaming on the Gold Coast (11-12 April 2026) and in Melbourne (18-19 April 2026)!
