Christopher Lloyd is best known as the beloved Emmett ‘Doc’ Brown (Back to the Future), unique Uncle Fester (The Addams Family) and the malevolent Judge Doom (Who Framed Roger Rabbit). The son of an heiress singer and a Connecticut lawyer, Lloyd can trace his ancestry back to the pilgrim settlers on the ‘Mayflower’
The future award-winning character actor began his acting career at 14 by appearing in Summer stock theatre seasons, which eventually led him to New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse and onward to Broadway. He earned his stripes on the stage in hundreds of classical productions including Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King Lear, and The Seagull.
His first major film role was as a psychiatric patient in the seminal Milos Forman drama, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and he soon rose to popularity as cabbie Reverend Jim Ignatowski (who was a raging Trekkie!) in the 1970s TV sitcom, Taxi. An amazing diversity of roles followed, including Butch Cavendish in The Legend of the Lone Ranger, Commander Kruge in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Professor Plum in Clue (known as ‘Cluedo‘ in Australia). However, it was alongside Marty McFly (Michael J Fox) as the wired and inspired Doc Brown that Christopher Lloyd reached cult status. The Back to the Future trilogy influenced a generation (we still want a DeLorean and a Hoverboard!) and spawned a 2010 video game, in which Lloyd also features.
He was also unforgettable as Roger Rabbit‘s diabolical Toontown nemesis, Judge Doom, and he thrilled audiences with his manic lightbulb-in-the-mouth gag as Uncle Fester in The Addams Family films. He even starred as the titular alien in the remake of My Favourite Martian and as Mr Goodman in Piranha 3D! Lloyd has also appeared in TV series such as Spin City, Numb3rs, and Fringe, as well as landmark stage productions of A Christmas Carol and Death of a Salesman.
A dedicated craftsman in his field, Christopher Lloyd is renowned as a private, quiet person. He was nicknamed ‘The Fog’ by castmate Clarence Felder due to the fact that “He doesn’t talk much, but he’s a real good guy.”
