Why You Should Get Excited For The DCU’S Latest Blockbuster, ‘Supergirl’!

Written by William Minazzo - June 9, 2026Daniel Cribb

In 2025, James Gunn’s Superman proved to be the ambitious initial step for DC Studios to launch the film slate for chapter one of the DCU, Gods and Monsters. The film successfully soared high at the box office and into the hearts of DC fans, critics, and moviegoers alike. In our review of Superman, we felt it delivered the definitive 21st-century take on the red-and-blue Boy Scout.

This trend of bold character-defining takes continues with this year’s Supergirl, hitting cinemas on June 25. Rising Aussie superstar Milly Alcock, best known as Young Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, stars as the Last Daughter of Krypton, Kara Zor-El/Supergirl.

In anticipation of this super-powered Hollywood blockbuster, let’s examine why you should be keen for this next exciting cinematic instalment in the DCU.

THE WOMAN OF TOMORROW

Set after the events of Superman, the plot of Supergirl follows Kara, who is unwittingly drawn into a quest against the dreaded Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts) on her 23rd Birthday. When the stakes become personal after the life of her closest companion is threatened, she must join forces with the mysterious Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley) on an interstellar journey to confront Krem once and for all.

This premise will sound familiar to DC fans, as this film is an adaptation of the recent, critically acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book limited series by Tom King.

Without delving into spoiler territory, the comic explored Supergirl’s psyche as a survivor of Krypton’s destruction, reimagining her as a hero at her lowest point, mentally. What does it take to unlock one’s inner strength and resilience if they have been internally broken for a long time? Can one become a symbol of hope even when they feel morally perplexed and conflicted?

The comic’s story also includes an updated origin for Kara’s life on Krypton and the events that led to her departure to Earth. This origin is notably more faithful to her original, pre-Crisis On Infinite Earths origin than prior updated renditions. With Woman of Tomorrow laying the foundation of future Supergirl and DC comics, it is apt that the film adaptation does the same for the DCU film-verse.

We can expect plenty of Easter Eggs, references, surprise cameos, more Krypto shenanigans, an appearance from David Corenswet’s Superman, and the long-awaited cinematic debut of “The Main Man” himself, Lobo, played by Jason Momoa.

LOBO’S BIG DAY OUT

Lobo is a Czarnian bounty hunter best known for his flippant, no-filter attitude, his custom interstellar motorcycle, and his adoration for space dolphins. He has been a fan-favourite character since his debut in issue 3 of Omega Men (Volume 1) in 1983.

Lobo is often portrayed as an antihero and a frenemy of Superman and the Justice League. Don’t get in the way of his payday or his quarry, as he is a very formidable and ruthless adversary once you have ticked him off!

He has appeared in many multimedia DC projects. These include Superman: The Animated Series (voiced by Brad Garrett), the Krypton Syfy TV series (played by Emmett J. Scanlan), and as a DLC playable character for the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game (voiced by Supa-Star alum David Sobolov).

Though the Woman of Tomorrow comic series does not feature Lobo, the story does feature plenty of bounty-hunting-related action, so his inclusion adheres to the spirit of the source material.

The film represents the opportunity to explore the greater DC canon that exists outside of planet Earth, and for Momoa to play his childhood-favourite character, a casting that has fulfilled a hugely requested fan casting. His role in the story remains undisclosed, but we are positive that Momoa will knock it out of the park no matter what!

TRUTH. JUSTICE. WHATEVER.

Director Craig Gillespie, Milly Alcock, and Jason Momoa sat down in an interview with Fandango during CinemaCon 2026 to discuss the film.

Alcock began the interview by explaining Supergirl’s mindset: “I think that she is someone who understands that in order to be good, you have to be a bit bad. I think that her moral compass isn’t as bound by rules as Superman’s. Because of this, it creates a really interesting dynamic within the DC world.”

Gillespie discussed the dynamic between Supergirl and Lobo in the film’s plot: “Her character is coming from such a place of trauma, and Lobo is sort of gregarious and oblivious. So, when you get that situation together, it becomes really interesting and fun in that dynamic of like how they bounce off each other because their characters are in such different places. That creates humour inherently in itself just by that dance.”

Momoa reflected on his casting of Lobo: “This was like, when you’re a kid, you’re like, ‘Oh my God, that was my comic book!’ So, you never think in a billion years you’re going to play… your childhood. It’s one of those pinch-me moments.”

Supergirl promises an unforgettable, interstellar adventure that will continue the high-quality world-building and storytelling standard set by Superman. It is an exhilarating time to be a fan of DC Comics and “The Girl of Steel”!

‘Supergirl’ soars into cinemas on June 25. Want an early look? Supa-Fans will also have the opportunity to catch an exclusive 20-minute sneak peek of Supergirl on Saturday afternoon in the Supergirl Theatre in Sydney!
