It all started back in 2017, when PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds leapt onto the gaming scene and broke Steam records by channelling The Hunger Games and pitting players against each other in a last-man-standing battle royale, where only one player comes out alive. The battle royale format really hit the big time soon after, when Fortnite was released and soon became an internet, streaming and cultural phenomenon. It’s since become a staple of the gaming industry, with the Titanfall (APEX Legends) and Call of Duty franchises jumping on board with their own takes on the formula.
This year, the newest battle royale to hit the scene, Spellbreak, is a little different: The players are all-powerful battlemages who can manipulate the forces of nature to wreak havoc on one another. Here are a few reasons you should give Spellbreak a crack.
Elemental Superpowered Magic
In the current entertainment climate, superheroes are pretty much everywhere we look. Whether it’s the Scarlet Witch’s telekinesis or Aang from The Last Airbender’s mastery of the elements, everyone wishes they could wield the magical powers of their favourite heroes. Well, thanks to Spellbreak, now you can.
Spellbreak allows you to control a battle mage who can harness a variety of elemental abilities using various collectible ‘gauntlets.’ These gauntlets can grant you different kinds of powers, ranging from frost, lightning, fire, poison, earth and wind – with more to come down the track. Each of these powers come with their own perks, like using ice to glide around the map, or using your wind ability to launch yourself into the air. There are major X-Men vibes in the way you can utilise your abilities.
Extremely Satisfying Combos
Okay, so maybe you’re an avid Fortnite or PUBG player and the sheer excitement of elemental magic alone hasn’t quite swayed you. May I present: magical combos! That’s right, you can have two different elements equipped at once, allowing you to unleash devastating, extremely powerful and, most importantly, incredibly satisfying power combinations.
If you’ve ever wanted to launch a boulder into the air and set it alight to turn it into a blazing meteor, Spellbreak has you covered. Experimenting with different combinations is part of the fun in this game, and it’s easy to get lost summoning tornadoes and zapping them with lightning to electrify them. The vibrant, colourfully cell-shaded art style of the game only makes these effects more pleasing to the eye.
Team and Duo Fun
Wizards battling it out Hunger Games-style with extraordinary elemental power combinations is great, but wouldn’t it be so much better with a couple of mates? Well, luckily Spellbreak has a teams mode, allowing you to battle as a team in a squad with one or two other players. You can coordinate your magical team and work together to be the winning squad.
Down the track, there may even be a team versus team duel mode, which would add even more fun to the multiplayer battlemage deathmatch fun.
For now, though, Spellbreak and all of its elemental wizardry is available for download on Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC, so why not go and give it a whirl?
