It’s not long now until Tom Holland returns as everyone’s favourite neighbourhood Spider-Man, and typically, in the lead-up to a movie such as this, we would look at compiling everything we already know about his highly anticipated return.
But, just like J. Jonah Jameson, we know that something’s not quite right with that masked menace, and we’re determined to get to the bottom of the latest Marvel mystery box.
While fans have already enjoyed several glimpses of Spidey’s latest web-slinging antics and have seen him coming face-to-face with Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, the recent spate of trailers has probably raised more questions than answers.
What’s more, with fans already well accustomed to the previous attempts to obscure the true nature of Spider-Man: No Way Home before its release, it’s almost guaranteed that Kevin Feige and the Marvel machine are also planning to pull another swift one on us all.
So, let’s see what the Web-Head is still hiding, ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s release on July 30.
Who’s The Real Villain?
So far, trailers for Brand New Day have shown Spidey coming face-to-face with an old adversary in the form of Michael Mando’s Scorpion, now complete with his cybernetic tail, as well as facing off against several of The Hand’s highly trained foot soldiers.
Previous announcements have also highlighted the classic Spidey foes Tombstone, played by Marvin Jones III (Black Lightning) and Tarantula, but the film’s main antagonist is still intentionally shrouded in mystery. Seen in the trailer to be unleashing psychic attacks that only Peter Parker is immune to, fans are already busy speculating who the film’s real bad guy (or gal) is.
Are They Really Hiding Daredevil?
It’s no secret that Bernthal’s Punisher is leaping across to the big screen in this Marvel outing, but speculation is rampant that Peter will also get a chance to team back up with Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock.
Beyond serving as Peter’s lawyer in No Way Home, Daredevil’s latest escapades recently saw him imprisoned for his vigilante antics at the end of Daredevil: Born Again season 2. As such, fans are already theorising that it may be the very same prison that Spidey can be seen breaking into throughout the trailers, and Peter may be planning some kind of jailbreak.
Further reinforcing these theories is the presence of the Hand, who appear to be trying to stop Peter from achieving his goals. Some especially curious viewers even suggest that a shot of Peter leaping into action against the Hand has been digitally altered to remove a second figure, something we know Marvel has already done by removing both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield from the No Way Home trailers.
Who Is Keith David Playing? Or Is That Even Him?
Despite never appearing in any official casting announcements, a voice that sounds remarkably like veteran performer and voice actor Keith David (Rick and Morty, Hazbin Hotel) is heard narrating one of the recent trailers, explaining the various life cycles of spiders. While this narration plays directly into Peter’s evolving powers (and new organic webshooters), the question remains exactly who David may be playing (if that’s even him at all).
So far, David has not officially confirmed that it is his voice featured in the trailer, and when quizzed by fans, he has simply elected to remain coy – neither confirming nor denying his involvement in the film.
Who Is Sadie Sink Playing?
Keith David isn’t the only unknown character to appear in Brand New Day, and the next mystery is probably bound to be the biggest one of the lot. Unlike David, Stranger Things Star Sadie Sink has already been officially confirmed and is even billed as the movie’s third headlining star after Holland and Zendaya. However, details of her character are still firmly under wraps.
While various theories abound, including linking her to the MCU’s plans to reboot the X-Men, Sink has also reportedly signed on for a 5-movie deal, so while Brand New Day may be her first MCU appearance, it likely won’t be her last.
Given the use of psychic attacks being unleashed on New York, most fans are already expecting that Sink is destined to become the MCU’s new Jean Grey. However, other theories have also pointed at everyone from Gwen Stacy to Mayday Parker (the daughter of Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst’s MJ).
Either way, all these questions and more are finally set to be answered when Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits cinemas on July 30. Just remember, though, Supa-Fans, finding out is half the fun, so once you’ve seen it, keep it to yourself and avoid spoiling the surprise for others!
