What We Know About The Animated ‘Firefly’ Revival Series

There ain’t no power in the ‘verse that could keep us from getting excited about a potential return to Captain Malcolm Reynolds’s Firefly-class ship Serenity. Ever since the original 14-episode season of Firefly was cut unceremoniously short in 2002, fans have been screaming out for a return to the beloved space western.

While the 2005 feature film Serenity would later help to soothe some of the wounds left by Firefly’s premature axing, audiences have long declared Firefly a prime example of a television show cut short, long before its time. Now, with Serenity crewmate Hoban “Wash” Washburne (Alan Tudyk) set to dock at Supanova Comic Con & Gaming in Adelaide (30 October – 1 November 2026) and Brisbane (6-8 November 2026), we thought it might be time to look at what the crew has teased for the show’s potential return.

Where Did This All Start?

After more than two decades mourning what Firefly could have been, Browncoats across the world were thrilled when Nathan Fillion first posted a cryptic video of him turning up on Summer Glau’s doorstep in March this year.

Fillion would then proceed to ratchet up the anticipation, going on to post videos of him visiting each surviving cast member in turn (sadly, Ron Glass passed away in 2016). It was clear that something Firefly-related was going to be announced; the only question was what.

Then, on March 15, at Awesome Con, Fillion revealed that plans for an animated Firefly revival series were currently underway with Marc Guggenheim, one of the co-creators of DC’s Arrowverse, and Tara Butters (Agent Carter, Gen V) at the helm.

When Will the Animated Series Be Set?

Given that 2005’s Serenity saw the death of some major characters, including Tudyk’s Wash, questions were instantly raised concerning the revival’s timeline. However, this problem has a simple solution, and the use of animation will allow the team to go back and set these new adventures between the events of Firefly season 1 and Serenity.

What About Shepherd Book?

While plans for the Firefly revival intend to have the whole crew reunited in their roguish jaunts across the stars, the question still remains what will happen with Glass’ Shepherd Book. Even though Serenity reveals that the Shepherd eventually parts company with Reynolds and his crew, Book is still a big part of the original show and a character that can not so easily be written out.

Thankfully, Fillion has intimated that the current plans are to include Shepherd Book in the new show, though another voice actor will inevitably need to take Glass’ place.

When Will We See It?

It’s still very early days yet, and at London’s MCM Comic-Con, Fillion and Tudyk emphasised that there is still a long road between the project’s inception and a potential greenlight from a streaming service or network.

Admitting that “it takes a lot longer than one would hope,” there is still no clear indication whether the show will even get picked up for an official order yet, let alone when audiences can expect to see it. One thing is for certain though, there’s definitely an appetite for it, and every dedicated Firefly fan is busy keeping their fingers crossed.
