Before Netflix’s #1 dysfunctional family of superheroes returns for a second season this week, we look back at some of the best moments from season one.
The Bank Heist
The bank heist is one of the first action scenes we get in the series, and it gives us a sneak peek at the lives of The Academy children back when they were just itty bitty crime fighters. It sets up Reginald Hargreeves with an opportunity to showcase the children to the world on TV as superheroes and for the children to demonstrate their powers against the would-be robbers of the bank.
I Think We’re Alone Now
Also in the first episode, and perhaps one of the most carefree moments of the entire series, Luther decides to play I Think We’re Alone Now by Tiffany on a record player.
The ensuing scene sees the big guy bopping along in his room as the music makes its way through the mansion to the other siblings, who in turn start moving and grooving to this classic ’80s track. The scene ends with a clever diorama view of the house that sees all of them dancing along in separate rooms of The Academy.
The Academy Siege
In the third episode, we get to see some of the Hargreeves siblings fight as adults when Cha Cha and Hazel enter The Academy in search of Five and encounter Diego, Allison and Luther. The scene showcases some awesome fight choreography, all while Klaus dances around the house with his headphones on, wearing… a towel.
All of this is topped off with the novelty animal masks Cha Cha and Hazel are wearing during their siege, followed by Luther’s shirt being ripped from a fallen chandelier, revealing his huge and hairy bod to his brothers and sisters.
Briefcase Negotiations
What better way to interrupt a negotiation situation than by crashing an ice cream truck into the back of a car while blasting Ride of the Valkyries! In episode five, Luther and Five ride out to the middle of nowhere to meet Cha Cha and Hazel and negotiate a meeting with the Handler in exchange for their time travelling briefcase. The Handler shows up right before Klaus and Diego crash the ice cream truck, freezes time and proposes a job offer to Five.
Vanya’s Revenge
Revenge is sweet in episode nine when Vanya finally finds Reginald Hargreeves’ diary in Leonard/Harold’s bag and realises that he was manipulating and lying to her the whole time. She repays this by unleashing the powers he helped her unlocked against him and lifts him into the air, throwing dozens of knives and scissors into his chest.
While Harold Jenkins was believed to be the cause of the upcoming apocalypse, it turns out he was just the fuse while Vanya and her powers are the bomb that starts the end of the world. Which leads us to…
Icarus Theatre
The Icarus Theatre is the final scene in the first season and sees Vanya charging her emotional energies while playing first chair violinist in the orchestra to an audience of hundreds. Her brothers and sister rock up with a plan to stop her, but she fights back against them and Commission soldiers rock up to stop them from preventing the apocalypse.
The highlight of this scene is when Klaus finally manifests his powers to their potential and brings the deceased sibling Ben into a corporeal form, allowing him to unleash monstrous tentacles from his chest to eliminate the soldiers.
The Apocalypse
Last of all is when Vanya’s charged energies are unleashed upon the moon and it explodes, showering Earth with the beginning of the apocalypse. Leaving no one behind, Five gets all of them to hold hands and attempts to jump everyone back in time, turning them all back into teenagers and only managing to make it out of there as the Icarus Theatre and the rest of Earth is engulfed in a fiery hellscape. We can’t wait to see what happens next in season two.
