2023 ended up being one of the best, but also most challenging years for gaming. We got many long-anticipated releases, like Zelda’s Tears of the Kingdom, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Alan Wake 2.
But 2023 also saw game developers laid off from studios like Naughty Dog, Bungie, CD Projekt Red, Bioware, and many more. Before we look to the future, it’s important to reflect on all the people who contributed to 2023 becoming one of the best years for game releases, and the hard work they each put into the games we play. Seriously, how many people outside of the Baldur’s Gate and DnD fanbase were expecting Baldur’s Gate 3 to be one of the best RPGs of all time?
And so, will 2024 be able to top 2023’s release schedule? Honestly, it’s hard to believe that’s possible — though rumours about the launch of the next Nintendo console could prove otherwise…
But in any case, we’ll still be spoiled for choice when it comes to what we’ll be playing (and adding to our own piles of shame) over the next 12 months. So, here are some of the most anticipated games for 2024!
#10 – Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
2024 — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
The remake of Hideo Kojima’s legendary Metal Gear Solid III will come a full two decades after the 2004 classic from the PS2 era. Snake Eater will return us to the boots of Snake as he delves into the jungle to prevent the largest war the world has ever seen. We can’t wait to see Snake’s origins with cutting-edge graphics and the series’ classic stealth combat!
#9 – No Rest for the Wicked
2024 (early access) — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
From Moon Studios, the award-winning developers of Ori and the Blind Forest and its sequel comes No Rest for the Wicked. Described as “a mature, precision action role-playing game”, it’s the studio’s first game outside of the Ori franchise, and will focus on combat that’s “animation-driven, direct, and tactile, allowing skilled players to combine visceral strikes and deadly moves.” Up to four players will be able to play together and share progress as they explore No Rest for the Wicked’s fantasy world.
#8 – Tekken 8
Jan 26 — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
2023 saw Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1 punching it out, but 2024 will be firmly in the hands of Tekken 8 as the legendary fighting series returns. According to director Katsuhiro Harada, Tekken 8 will be most rewarding for aggressive players, and introduce the ‘Heat’ system that allows for new moves and chip damage. There will also be a focus on cinematic and destructible environments, plus all-new character models and voice lines that will make Tekken 8 the best-looking game in the series.
#7 – Princess Peach Showtime!
March 22 — Nintendo Switch
Not since 2005’s Super Princess Peach has gaming’s top royal been featured as a main protagonist. This action-adventure title will see Princess Peach saving the play at the Sparkle Theater from the Wicked Grape and the Sour Bunch. To do so, Peach will don different costumes to gain different abilities, including becoming Kung Fu Peach, Detective Peach, and Patisserie Peach. We’ll only have to wait until March to find out what other costumes Peach is packing in her wardrobe!
#6 – Dragon’s Dogma 2
March 22 — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
After 12 years, we’re finally getting a Dragon’s Dogma sequel! Dragon’s Dogma 2 will have features that were cut from the original due to past technological restraints, with game director Hideaki Itsuno saying the team aims to “achieve a more immersive RPG and action-adventure for the player”. Players will take the role of a new Arisen (a person marked by a dragon) as they become caught in a war between two kingdoms. The game’s open world will be four times larger than the first game’s, and be filled with intense combat within destructible environments.
#5 – Hades 2
2024 (early access) — PC
When the first Hades came out in 2020, it instantly became a critical success and quickly gained popularity for its clever roguelike design and narrative, and a slick take on the Greek underworld as players took the role of Zagreus, the son of Hades, and battled mythological beings.
Hades 2 is planned to have an extensive early access period much like the original, and looks to greatly expand on what made the first game great, as we play as Melinoë, Zagreus’ sister, as she goes beyond Hell and enters into other realms of Greek mythology.
The game is expected to initially release into early access on PC sometime from April to June, with a full release coming later, including for consoles.
#4 – Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Jan 26 — PC; PlayStation 4 and 5; Xbox One and Series X/S
The most absurd crime series in gaming is back with the latest entry in the Yakuza series! As the follow-up to 2020’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon, this year’s Infinite Wealth features Ichiban Kasuga, and the franchise’s original protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, jumping between both Japan’s Yokohama City and Hawaii’s Honolulu.
Infinite Wealth will likely once again combine emotional stakes with wild and goofy action, as Ichiban searches for his biological mother on the Hawaiian island, in between combat with a giant shark, heaps of minigames, and even dolphin riding!
#3 – Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2
May 21 — PC, Xbox Series X/S
The follow-up to Ninja Theory’s award-winning Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, famous for its immersive depiction of a young, Celtic woman experiencing psychosis as she battles through Hel.
Senua’s journey this time will take her to 10th Century Iceland, hunting down the Vikings that have enslaved her people. On her journey, she’ll battle Giants, and the new threat, Draugr, monsters that have appeared as a consequence of the land being plunged into supernatural darkness. Ninja Theory have promised a totally revamped combat system that is even more cinematic, and one that injects the narrative into the fighting. According to the devs, we’re gonna feel like we “always just scraped through, just survived it.” It promises to be even emotional, stressful, and immersive than the original!
#2 – Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Feb 29 — PlayStation 5
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be the follow-up to 2020’s acclaimed FFVII Remake and the second in the new FFVII trilogy, a remake of one of the absolute best Final Fantasy games ever (and there’s a lot of them now!). Remake was well received for being a modern, but faithful, recreation of the original game, and Rebirth is set on continuing that legacy.
Rebirth will once again feature real-time combat and exploration that the modern Final Fantasy games are known for, and continue expanding on FFVII’s world. Whereas Remake took place entirely within Midgar city, Cloud and his group will pursue Sephiroth through much more of the world. Even players of the original FFVII will find a few new surprises along the game’s narrative that we can’t wait to see!
#1 – Star Wars: Outlaws
Late 2024 — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
Not only is Outlaws a Star Wars game, it’s the first-ever open-world Star Wars game!
Outlaws’ story will focus on Kay Vass, a scoundrel making her way up through the galaxy’s seedy underbelly. The game is set between the original trilogy’s The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, a time when the Galactic Empire still reigns. We’re expecting high-stakes heists, blaster fights, a customisable speeder bike, and at least one run-in with The Hutts as Kay and Nix, an adorable axolotl-like companion.
And did we mention it has space combat? Players will pilot The Trailblazer and engage The Empire and more in intense dogfights where you’ll have to evade, chase and blast your way to victory!
