With Scarlett Johansson’s tenure as Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow coming to a close, rumours have been swirling that Warner Bros. are keen for the actress to jump the fence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe over to the DCEU. Since joining the rival MCU in 2010’s Iron Man 2, Johansson has not only become one of the most recognisable faces on the planet, but she’s also topped Forbes’ Highest Paid Actress list three years running thanks to her turn as the Avengers’ own Russian super-spy.

With that sort of box office appeal, it’s no surprise that fans have been wondering if Warner Bros. will seize the opportunity and sign Johansson on to join their own comic book universe, and, more importantly, one character’s name seems to keep bubbling to the top of all that speculation.

It’s been awhile Supa-Fans, but it’s time to go digging through the Supanova supply closet, somewhere between the mop and bucket and a box of old phone cords that no longer fit any modern devices but we’re too afraid to throw them out anyway, and dust off the good old Supanova Scuttlebutt-o-meter©®™ (Patent Pending).

So, how about it? Should we put the rumours of Scarlett Johansson being DC’s next Poison Ivy to the test?

So what’s the goss?

Various parts of the web are suggesting that Warner Bros. are literally tripping over themselves to try and court Johansson to join the DCEU. While some of these rumours are vague to say the least, others seem to suggest that they could potentially be looking for her to assume the mantle of DC’s plant-loving villainess Poison Ivy.

Where did all this come from?

At the moment, no officially confirmed sources indicate that anything like this is on the horizon. Though, as always there are still a number of sites and gossipmongers quoting “anonymous sources” which suggest these negotiations are currently well underway (as opposed to “anonymous sauces” which is what we mistakenly put on our midnight snacks without really looking exactly what bottles we grab out of the fridge).

Probably the best indication that Warner Bros. would be keen to enlist Johansson’s talents resides in their hiring of director James Gunn for The Suicide Squad, prior to his return to the helm of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Seeing that Johansson’s time in the MCU appears to have come to a close, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that this would be an opportune moment to make her an offer.

As for the role of Poison Ivy, talks of bringing Pamela into the DCEU have been floating around for years, with Margot Robbie repeatedly voicing her desire to see the DCEU explore the relationship between Harley Quinn and Ivy. Of course, with Warner Bros. also creating an alternate Batman universe focused on Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne, it’s possible that they may be looking to keep Ivy for that portion of their expanding cinematic multiverse, separate to Robbie’s Harley (we hope not, though).

It would seem, however, that Johansson’s name isn’t the only one being connected with the character, with Transformers star Megan Fox also being tossed around in other bits of web gossip doing the rounds.

What’s the verdict?

So, after we supplied the Supanova Scuttlebutt-o-meter©®™ (Patent Pending) with all the relevant details, it sprouted vines and began threatening to rid Gotham of all the pesky humans endangering its beloved plants. After we got out the trusty hedge trimmer and attacked it with some Roundup, it finally caved in and spat out a 7.72% likelihood rating.

As awesome as the idea of Johansson tackling the role of Poison Ivy, especially in the event she gets to team up with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, all the signs seem to point to this one being little more than fan speculation. While it seems likely we will eventually get another big-screen Poison Ivy, the odds of it ending up being Scarlett Johansson seem slim. As such it’s probably best to call this rumour: highly unlikely, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed anyway.
