Are you ready to believe in truth, justice, and a better tomorrow, Supa-Fans? Prepare yourselves for the all-new Superman film from director James Gunn, which has just soared only into cinemas!
In anticipation of the upcoming blockbuster, we kicked off our celebrations late last month, with the Man of Steel taking over Supanova in Sydney and Perth. Of course, no convention is complete without its cosplay community, and Superman Supa-Fans were up, up, and away, joining us on stage for the Superman Friends and Villains Cosplay Competition in both cities.

Exclusively open to cosplayers representing the DC multiverse, the Superman Theatre was home to the World’s Finest, featuring top-tier takes on the Last Son of Krypton, as well as his famous friends, foes, and frenemies. From Kal-Els to Karas, Lanterns and Luthors, it was quite an Extended Universe of cameos! For more shots from the competitions captured by Supanova’s very own Jimmy Olsens, visit the official gallery.
Each city’s winners were lucky enough to score invites to red carpet premieres of Superman, witnessing the dawn of a new age of heroes ahead of its release on July 10. We can’t wait to hear their thoughts, but in the meantime, read on to find out what the Supanova team thought of the film.

When James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ was announced back in 2023, moviegoers were uncertain as to how “superhero fatigue” would affect this new chapter for DC. Did we have it in us to start a whole new cinematic universe? If the first caped hero himself couldn’t get off the ground, what would it spell for the future of comic book films as a whole? And after the divisive DCEU, what would a bright, shiny, hopeful Superman movie look like in 2025? We can wholeheartedly say that, just like the titular hero himself, DC Studios’ Superman has landed in the nick of time and delivered an all-timer superhero blockbuster!

The film successfully delivers the 21st Century’s definitive take of the red-and-blue Boy Scout, with an old-fashioned sense of what it means to be both “Super” and “Man.” David Corenswet perfectly captures Clark Kent/Superman in his early 30s, and his struggles with society as an alien outsider who just wants to put his best foot forward for a better tomorrow.
Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is the egocentric, sociopathic 12th-level intellect we know and love from the comics, and he’s unafraid to challenge Supes head-on! His performance is refreshingly true to his character’s “roots” (or lack thereof).
The film follows Superman in his third year since donning the cape. Without giving too much away, the Man of Steel saves millions of lives and prevents an impending war, inadvertently interfering with the international affairs of the USA in the process, and placing himself directly in the crosshairs of his genius arch-nemesis. Seizing the opportunity to strike, Luthor rallies his enforcer group, the “Planet Watch”, led by Ultraman and the
Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), to tarnish Superman’s reputation. Will Luthor succeed in his devious machinations against his greatest rival?

Thankfully, Superman isn’t alone in his fight for justice! Make way for the shapeshifting Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and the “Justice Gang”, consisting of the mace-wielding Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), the always terrific Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and the wisecracking Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), the fearless leader of the group. If justice isn’t enough to save the day, then how about the journalistic integrity for the truth? Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), Perry White (Wendell Pierce), and the rest of the hardworking crew at the Daily Planet have it covered!
If a director isn’t careful, juggling a large ensemble cast can sometimes cause problems with a film’s story and pacing, but this isn’t the case here, as the characters are already familiar with each other and well-established in the world of the DCU. By the good graces of the cinematic format, the character interactions and conversations bring you up to speed without the need for long-winded introductions and having to read the previous eight hundred or so issues. You don’t need to know a single thing about the DC universe to enjoy this film because the story drip-feeds the viewer the right amount of context to make sure you never feel lost.

DC fans will rejoice – every character gets a moment to shine, with Fillion’s Guy Gardner, Gathegi’s Mr Terrific, and Brosnahan’s Lane stealing the show. After all, what’s Superman without his Super-Friends? Gunn has miraculously produced a visually stunning and well-paced film that feels like reading a Superman graphic novel come to life. You will believe a man can fly again!
