Ahead of his exclusive Saturday only appearance at Supanova in Sydney (22-23 June), we had a quick catch-up with writer/director/actor Bren Foster (2015’s Mad Max video game, The Last Ship) to learn a little more about Life After Fighting before his panel.
Retired martial arts world champion Alex is living a quiet life, when two of his students are abducted, forcing him to take up arms once again, unearth a child trafficking operation, and save the girls. With black belts in taekwondo, hapkido, hwarang-do and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, there’s no one more qualified than Bren to champion Australia’s next martial arts action flick, which recently had its world premiere!
Congratulations on the premiere of Life After Fighting!
The response was amazing; people were cheering, screaming and clapping in the cinema. Afterwards, we were completely overrun with people and their compliments. I don’t think we could have asked for a better response.
What did you set out to achieve with this film?
A seamless integration of high drama that Australian films are known for with high action.
What were some of the challenges of being so hands-on with this project?
Exhaustion and fatigue, but I got to make the movie I wanted to make as I didn’t have to navigate or appease anyone else.
What do you hope audiences take away from the film?
That performance, story and action can go together well.
Fans at Supanova in Sydney can meet you on Saturday at our Mad Max stand, and you’re of course the voice of Max Rockatansky in the 2015 Mad Max video game. Tell us a little about your experience working on that title…
It was a fantastic experience and it spanned years in the making. And boy was it a fun ride.
Why do you think Mad Max has such an enduring legacy?
It made an impact all over the world, so that tends to stamp its mark on a permanent level.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I’m looking forward to attending my first Supanova.
Mad Max Supa-Stars of every era will blaze down the Fury Road to Supanova Comic Con & Gaming’s upcoming events in Sydney (22-23 June 2024) and Perth (29-30 June 2024)!
Leading the charge alongside previously announced star Steve Bisley is the villainous Vernon Wells, known as Mad Max 2‘s most fearsome henchman in the Wasteland, Wez. Sydney fans will also have the opportunity to catch Roger Ward (Capt. ‘Fifi’ Macaffee) and Tim Burns (Johnny the Boy) from the original cult classic film, with Tim also appearing as Hungry Eyes in the long-awaited prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, in cinemas now.
