It’s Brisnova weekend, baby! Supanova Comic Con & Gaming will blast into the Queensland capital tomorrow, along with line-up of local legends including Pretty Little Liars‘ Tammin Sursok, Mortal Kombat fighters Nathan Jones and Daniel Nelson, plus more. But these Supa-Stars aren’t the only reason to head on down to the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre on the 6th and 7th of November; Supanova is set to host a hall (haul?) full of exciting Exhibitors, featuring everything from anime merch to tabletop gaming.
For lovers of original art, The Alley is the place for you! Featuring talented creators from Brisbane and beyond, here are just a few of the artisans you’ll find at Supanova in Brisbane, this weekend.
Chalkboard E
Lovers of traditional art won’t want to miss Chalkboard E’s kawaii and quirky illustrations, inspired by Japanese culture, mythology and philosophy.

Using only pen and ink, Eri creates finely detailed illustrations, utilising intriguing shapes and patterns, and a combination of traditional and contemporary styles to catch the eye. But her exquisite style’s not the only thing that sets Chalkboard E apart: one of her most popular series, the Nine Tailed Fox 九尾(Kyubi) Collection, is imbued with meaning, down to its limited print run. Eri explains:
“I only create nine Nine Tailed Fox originals each year, and 30 limited edition art prints from one of the nine original art works. Each year has different theme that I collaborate with, and every fox has a meaning and message behind them.”
With her work ever-evolving, Eri aims to share her Japanese culture through her beautiful art. Fans can browse her range of original artwork, prints and unique merchandise at Table 55 in the Created Collectables section.

Cutiesaurus Art
Bright colours. Fantastic femmes. Lots of lizards. Visiting Cutiesaurus Art is a MUST at Brisnova, this weekend! A 2017 recipient of The Banksia Project, Cutiesaurus is a comic book artist and illustrator, known for their vibrant and whimsical art style. Inspired by both American and Japanese comics, J-fashion, cute food and animals, plus more, her goal is to create artwork that makes viewers feel happy and seen.

Their work is also reflective of their experiences as someone who is chronically ill and part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Their short comic, Pick Your Battles, follows a magical girl with chronic pain and fatigue, and has been warmly received by fellow spoonies.
“It was a bit emotionally draining to write, but some of my favourite reactions I’ve gotten about my art have been from fellow people with chronic pain who appreciated being able to read about someone like them. Being able to let your loved ones know when you need help due to your health and being kind to yourself when you can’t always do what you used to be able to do was something really important to me to show.”
In addition to her existing catalogue of comics and can badges, shoppers will also be able to pick up some exciting new items inspired by Brisbane’s illustrious bin chickens. ONI KATSU
The cuteness continues with ONI KATSU, whose adorable anime-inspired enamel pins, acrylic keychains and unique apparel you may have seen at previous Supanova events all across the country!

When asked how their creations come into being, ONI KATSU shared the following process:
“I digitally draw my designs featuring original characters and fan characters [before they’re sent to the manufacturer]. For other products like stickers/sticker sheets, prints or sketchbooks, I draw the designs digitally and print them at home, cut them with my Cricut [a digital cutting machine] and package them. Additional steps may be taken if I’m doing another products~”

This one’s for the literary lovers en route to Brisnova! Ouroborus Book Services and Ravenscraft Tea are a collective of writers and tea makers, and frankly we can’t think of a better combination, as there’s no greater joy in this world than sitting down with a good book and a cuppa!

It’s no surprise that Ouroborus Book Services specialises in spec-fic, with their entire team raised on a healthy diet of pop culture. They explain: “it runs in our blood. Creating was the inevitable result”.

A. Christou Illustration and Concept Art
Finally, our very own Alley Artisan turned Supa-Star: Anthony Christou! A fantasy illustrator, fine artist, game designer and writer, Anthony has worked with studios such as Grinding Gear Games on Path of Exile and with Disney on some video games in Japan as an environment artist.

Best known for his Luminous Ages series, Anthony’s second installment in the saga, Tavern of Dreams, was Australia’s highest funded novel on Kickstarter in May of this year. In response to this incredible accomplishment, Anthony replied with the following:
“Being the highest funded novelist in Australia on Kickstarter is something I never expected. I am proud of the works I created, and my graphic novels sell out at every convention. Coming in soon with the new Tavern of Dreams book is the five year anniversary hard cover edition of Luminous Ages the graphic novel with foil printing. I cannot wait to show it off at conventions across Australia!”
