Book Club: September’s Most-Anticipated Reads

September 2, 2019Daniel Cribb

If you’re searching for your new favourite book and/or author, look no further. We invited our friends from QBD Books to tell us which titles they are most looking forward to in September.

A Little Hatred (Age of Madness, #1)

By Joe Abercrombie

Joe Abercrombie really hit the fantasy map with his series of novels, The First Law. At last, he is back and anyone who likes Abercrombie will be seriously excited to read this one. Butt-kicking fantasy with action and excellent characters.

Kingdom of Souls

By Rena Barron

Kingdom of Souls follows Arrah, a young woman from a long line of powerful witchdoctors, who is born without a scrap of magic in her blood. But magic can be bought at a dangerous and devastating price – if Arrah is willing to pay it. Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone was one of my favourite reads of 2018, and Kingdom of Souls seems to have a similar flavour, steeped in West African mythology and magic. I also love a ruthless female protagonist, and Arrah sounds like she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get what she wants. Really looking forward to it!

The Tenth Girl

By Sara Faring

The world needs more young adult horror, and this one looks incredible! An Argentinian folklore and history-inspired gothic thriller, set in a school that has been cursed for hundreds of years. Mavi, a young teacher trying to avoid military attention, has her life overturned when a student goes missing, and every member of the school starts acting as if possessed. I’m so excited to see what mysteries unfurl.

The Ten Thousand Doors of January

By Alix E. Harrow

Lonely orphan January Scaller, cared for but largely ignored by her guardian, discovers a strange book in the rambling old mansion she live in. In it, she learns of a love that spans worlds, a secret past… and how every story opens a door. This novel sounds like a love letter to the power of stories, how they shape us, how they change us, how they transport us. I’m well aware of how stories have shaped my life, so I’m really excited to read this one.

Cold Storage

By David Koepp

I can’t wait to get my hands on Cold Storage by David Koepp! He is the screenwriting master-mind behind Jurassic Park, Spider-Man and Mission Impossible (just to name a few), and now comes his debut novel! A sci-fi thriller, set in Western Australia, about a deadly organism causing absolute havoc – yes, please!

– Alyssa, QBD Books Penrith, NSW

Steel Crow Saga

By Paul Krueger

A pipe-smoking detective who is secretly a princess, a cursed soldier, a prince well past his downfall, and a thief who has lost everything. This group of misfits will get more than they bargained for when they team up to stop an unstoppable killer. A mix of betrayals and new bonds, and so many crazy antics.

Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove #1)

By Shelby Mahurin

With a marriage of convenience between a witch and a witch hunter, Serpent & Dove sounds like it’s going to be an intense read that deals with many different themes. I love the idea of mixing morally complex and grey characters, in a world where hate is what makes it thrive.

– Angelique, QBD Books Broadmeadows, VIC

Gideon the Ninth

By Tamsyn Muir

Tamsyn Muir has a strong reputation for her short fiction and her debut novel has been highly anticipated. Swords, cut-throat politics, necromancers, magic that can bring bones to life and power-seeking galactic domination. This one promises to have it all.

– Ross, QBD Books Woden, ACT

There Will Come a Darkness

By Katy Rose Pool

This is being described as perfect for fans of Throne of Glass and promises to have excellent world-building. A secret prophecy, an exiled prince and a ruthless killer – what more could you want? This YA fantasy debut sounds absolutely magical with an amazing premise, and a beautiful cover to boot. I love multi-POV stories, so I’m excited to get into this one! It’s one of my most anticipated releases for the rest of the year, for sure.

– Rosie, QBD Books Carousel, WA

Archangel’s War (Guild Hunter #12)

By Nalini Singh

Archangel’s War is my most anticipated book of Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series! I need to know if the world is going to survive another wave of power from the ever-growing Cascade! I need to know if Elena’s human compassion will survive the angelic vipers that control the world!
