What is old is new again, or at least that seems to be the current theme in the entertainment industry, with reboots of Charmed, Roswell and Buffy The Vampire Slayer on the horizon; however, none of these announcements have fans more abuzz than that of the latest series to join their ranks, audience favourite Veronica Mars.
A detective show unlike any other, the series followed Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) as she went through high school and college, all the while solving mysteries with her private detective Dad, Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni), in the most captivating ways possible.
The first season followed Veronica as she solved the murder of her best friend, and it was enough to get us all hooked on the show, the characters and the actors that played them. This fascination held us throughout the show’s three seasons, and had us all wondering what would become of our favourites in the aftermath of the series’ untimely end. Perhaps it was a combination of all of these things that meant that even post-finale, Veronica Mars continued to have audience success.
The series has an unbelievable following, so much so that a fan-funded Kickstarter campaign raised $3.7 million in mere hours; money that was then used to produce a Veronica Mars movie that was supposed to tie up some loose ends from the season three and series finale. It featured most of the original cast and meant that we finally got to see Veronica and Logan together at last in a bittersweet moment in the end.
However, it wasn’t just the movie that sprouted from the end of the show. A spin-off web series called Play It Again, Dick also came about. It focused on actor Ryan Hansen’s character, Dick Casablancas, and his take on the events of the TV series. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be and only lasted one season, but it does go to show that both the fans and actors alike are as much in love with this series as they were the day it first aired.
The show’s creator, Rob Thomas, is reportedly in the final stages of making a deal with Hulu for an eight-episode limited series, with star Kristen Bell reprising her role. While details of the storyline are still under wraps, there are things as fans we would want to see and some questions we would like answered from this massively hyped reboot.
Assuming that a time jump occurs to accommodate for the ageing of the actors, does that mean Veronica and Logan are married now? Do they have kids? Is Veronica still a private detective? Is Logan still a military man? And although we all probably know the answer to this, did Dick finally grow up?
While the Veronica Mars movie answered many questions, we as an audience were still left wanting more and though many of us are hoping to get our answers from this reboot, only time will tell if our hopes and prayers are answered.
