Produced by Seth Rogen, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will bring the Heroes in a Half Shell back to the big screen for another cinematic adventure, this time with a few fresh and exciting changes. In anticipation of its September 7 release, we pulled together a list of what we’re most excited to see.
VILLAINS AND OTHER MUTANTS
Since its creation in 1983, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has introduced a slew of iconic villains; some of which – such as Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady – have become just as iconic as the titular heroes themselves in many way. Mutant Mayhem is going to give us a wide range of villains all in one movie, and the design of each looks super promising. Fans can expect to see Baxter Stockman voiced by the talented Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Boys, The Mandalorian), Superfly voiced by Ice Cube, Rocksteady voiced by John Cena and Bebop with the talent of Seth Rogen. Adding to the list of characters, Turtle fans can also expect to see a large number of other mutants throughout the movie, including Leatherhead, Ray Fillet, and turtle friend Mondo Gecko.
STORY AND DESIGN
The story of Mutant Mayhem will be one of the first TMNT movies not to focus on Shredder as a main antagonist, a refreshing idea that will give forgotten faces the spotlight and connection to the titular heroes. The film will follow the four turtle brothers as they try to be accepted as normal teenagers, and try and gain the trust of New Yorkers. With the help of reporter April O’Neil, the turtles set out across the city to stop crime, but soon encounter an army of mutants and things get a little messy…
As for its design, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse may have introduced the masses to hyper-stylised CGI, and while what we’ve seen so far from Mutant Mayhem looks to take a similar path, this latest TMNT entry will no doubt carve its own, exciting path – one we can’t wait to experience.
JACKIE CHAN AS MASTER SPLINTER
One of the most beloved characters of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe is Master Splinter. As all Turtle fans know, Splinter is the master and father-like figure to the four turtles. He taught them their ninja skills and gave them the heroic bravery they display, no matter what the threat. Having Master Splinter be voiced by an iconic actor such as Jackie Chan is something a lot of fans are excited about. Director Jeff Rowe wrote a letter to Jackie Chan personally, asking him to voice the character. It appears that the letter did its job.
THE TURTLES… OF COURSE
And finally, we are all looking forward to seeing Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu), Donatello (Micah Abbey), Michelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr.), and Raphael (Brady Noon) back on the big screen! Each hero will be voiced by new and upcoming teenage actors, something no other Turtle movie has done before. This adds another level of authenticity to the overall vibe of the film. The Turtles look awesome too; each wearing initialed belt buckles, just like they did in the 1987 animated series.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will be a movie for all ages and will hit Australian cinemas on September 7. COWABUNGA, DUDES!
