Voice acting legends Troy Baker (The Last of Us I & II, Death Stranding, Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Nolan North (Uncharted, Assassin’s Creed, Young Justice) will bring their acclaimed YouTube series RETRO REPLAY to Supanova Comic Con & Gaming Melbourne and Gold Coast this month!
We caught up with the duo ahead of their Friday night RETRO REPLAY Live! appearances to get insight into the show’s inception and more.
“I knew Nolan North before I knew Nolan North,” Baker tells Supanova.
“I was a big fan of Uncharted, then next thing you know, we would do occasional jobs together and I thought, ‘Hey, this is a fun guy,’ but it wasn’t until we did the press tour for Uncharted 4 that we really got to hang.”
Nolan adds: “We spent a lot more time together, and that lead to conventions like Supanova, where we would end up being booked at these places together and would always have a panel together… we found this really cool dynamic and played off each other.”
Baker goes into more depth about said dynamic: “I would come in and I would say something deep and meaningful about the creative process, and then Nolan would come and make an inappropriate joke or something [North laughs]. People seemed to like it.”
And then, as Nolan tells, “we just decided to get together and play old video games,” and RETRO REPLAY was born.
The project, which is currently in its second season, sees them share their wit and wisdom with the world and explain the history behind their favourite retro games.
“People talk about RETRO REPLAY and ask how would you categorise it,” Nolan says.
“You always hear about bands that split up and go solo, well, we are like two solo acts that said, ‘let’s start a band together.'”
Individually, they’ve accrued some serious credits over the years, one highlight for North being his time voicing Deadpool.
“The interesting thing is, I was actually the first person to voice Deadpool in Hulk vs. Wolverine, not a game but in a cinematic way, animated or otherwise,” he tells.
“The whole thing was ad-libbed,” he reveals. “I was shown the scenes that they shot and not shown the dialogue – I just ad-libbed the whole movie.
“Recently, Ryan Reynolds was with [YouTuber] Jacksepticeye and he was talking about me and how much he liked that performance… I’m just hoping the success of his movies lead to another game – we need another Deadpool game.”
Shifting from Marvel to DC, Baker dives into voicing one of the most iconic characters of all time, Batman.
“I don’t think you own these characters, you never own these characters, we are coming up on 80 years of Batman so ain’t nobody ever owned Batman,” he says.
“Your job is to do what you can to move the character down the line a little bit and teach the audience and the fans […] something new about that character, and then your job’s done and it goes on to somebody else.”
Fans of their respective projects have more than embraced the wild ride that is RETRO REPLAY, with Baker quick to acknowledge and praise them.
“When things kinda get a little messed up and a little confusing politically as they are right now, it’s just kind of a nice breath of fresh air to see a community really come in and support each other and to be a part of that,” he says.
Troy Baker and Nolan North will record an episode of RETRO REPLAY as part of a special ticketed event at Supanova Melbourne and Gold Coast. Tickets are on sale now!
