Get ready, Supa-Fans! Supa-Star Sara Tomko will be soon be blasting into Brisbane for her upcoming appearances at Supanova Comic Con & Gaming (6-8 November 2026).
We caught up with the Resident Alien and Once Upon a Time star in anticipation of her arrival to discuss all things creativity and acting.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE ACTING?
I have been playing with imaginary circumstances since I was very young; my mom caught me making out with the table leg in my playroom when I was four! Clearly Soap Opera ready! My older brothers played sports, so I played “with” them by being the fans, the coach, the popcorn man, the band. I remember one football game; near the field, there was an outdoor amphitheatre.
I couldn’t be stopped from running to the stage and bursting out in a random monologue. I even came out of the womb dramatically. Many doctors around, in the spotlight, everyone worried; I was perfectly fine, just upset I got pushed out too early. Oh, the drama!
Then, enter the college years. I fell in love with Blackbox experimental theatre. I did a show my senior year where I blacked out every night. I truly could not remember what I had done because I had been so in it; I became the woman I was portraying. It was powerful. After that, I knew there was nothing else I’d rather do.
WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH SUPA-STAR ALAN TUDYK ON RESIDENT ALIEN?
Alan is an incredible actor, and working together was an instant chemistry, although I must admit, I think we had a very meta experience getting to know one another, just like Harry and Asta. We have very different ways of approaching the work, and so being in scenes together was always a discovery, an exploration. He is a comedic genius, and I was never bored.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MEMORY FROM THE SET OF RESIDENT ALIEN?
I have many, but the one that always stands out to me was when we shot Season 2, Episode 8, ‘Alien Dinner Party.’ We were all together, laughing so much, and I’m chasing around a baby alien with a gun. It doesn’t get more memorable than that.
HAS RESIDENT ALIEN’S POPULARITY SURPRISED YOU?
I knew once audiences found this gem, they’d fall in love just like I did. It’s incredible writing, instant acting chemistry with the cast and a heartfelt comedy. It was necessary, especially in COVID times, and we became a show that people leaned on. It’s not surprising at all. People are still discovering it today and falling in love. And we are so grateful.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO PURSUE THEIR CREATIVE AMBITIONS?
We have no idea what happens after this life. No one is watching you like you think they are, and I say that as someone people are watching! Everyone is concerned about themselves and finding their purpose, so take care of yourself! If it moves your soul, I say do it! Act now. No day but today! Creative flow is the key to life!
IF YOU COULD REPRISE ANY ROLE FROM YOUR ACTING PORTFOLIO, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
Great question! I have a dream to reprise the role of ‘The Skriker.’ A play I did junior year of college. It was an incredible underground fantasy grim fairytale, and I played her when I was 19. But she should be much, much older. How cool to reconnect with her when I’m 70 or 80-something. It’s in the cards.
ARE THERE ANY PROJECTS YOU’RE CURRENTLY WORKING ON THAT YOU CAN SHARE WITH US?
I just finished two indie films this summer, one called Third Shift about a head nurse trying to save a pregnant woman’s life and help her give birth while the hospital is under attack. Very John McClane low-budget drama and so fun to make. And also, yet another Sci-Fi comedy with heart called Bad Day for Bigfoot, where mayhem breaks out in a small town when Bigfoot has been spotted… or has he??
My character, Marlena, is the town’s detective and has her own theories after losing her father to Bigfoot when she was young. I am looking for the truth while what feels like The Three Stooges are going in circles around me. It also stars Chris Elliott and Michael Ian Black, who were incredibly fun to work with. I assume both films will come out in 2027. Here’s hoping!
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AT SUPANOVA AND WHY?
I’ve never been to Australia, so I’m excited to explore this vibrant side of the world. Also, I am elated to know our fans come from miles away, and to connect with them in person brings me such joy. Even answering these questions is so sweet; if you’re still reading and care about these answers, I see you, and I thank you!
