INTERVIEW: ‘It Will Find You’ Star Kylah Day Talks Horror, Cultural Roots & More!

Written by William Minazzo - June 18, 2026Daniel Cribb

It Will Find You is an Australian indie horror and one of the highlights of this year’s Showcase Australia! programming for Supanova in Sydney (19-21 June 2026).

The film’s plot follows Emily Baker (Kylah Day), who is stalked by the “Giniirr” spirit after accidentally activating a generational curse that has been inactive for 25 years. Shunned by the others around for being “crazy”, she must reconnect with her Indigenous heritage to break the curse for good, before her life is taken as payment for ancestral sins.

Supanova sat down with Day to discuss this exciting film.

“Every process is different when it comes to preparing for my roles,” she says.

“Getting into Emily’s character was about understanding her history, where she came from, her culture, and her experience. I would listen to music, or write as Emily, and that would help me understand her mindset and the emotions that she goes through in the film.”

Day explains that film genres go through creative and popularity booms, with horror having recent mainstream and critical success thanks to Oscar-winning flicks such as Sinners and Weapons.

“For a long time, the general consensus with horror was that it was just scary. You’d see people make silly decisions, and you’d be like, ‘Why are you doing that?’

“It Will Find You is eerie and has an interesting story. My character, Emily, has an intense and rapid mental decline in the film. It has themes about mental health, and people’s understanding; that type of conversation.”

She emphasises, “You see a very clear and emotive story through Emily’s character, which is what drew me to the character. It wasn’t just baseline scary. There was more depth because of the emotional journey of Emily.”

Emily Baker is a sharp contrast in comparison to her previous roles in shows such as Itch and Territory. Was Day a horror fan prior to being cast?

“I definitely like horror and thrillers. The Lovely Bones was such a good film. I watched it when I was really young, and it terrified me. It’s such a good film and so beautifully articulated.

“I went into this role with my own ideas. It’s good to be inspired, but I didn’t want to be swayed in any kind of direction with any kind of performance or storyline. I wanted Emily’s character and the story being told to be true to that and not have an influence from outside voices.”

She elaborates on her personal connection with the film’s story. “I don’t want to talk too much about it, but it’s very clear at the beginning of the film that Emily doesn’t have her mum with her, and her mum is her link to her Indigenous heritage. So essentially, she’s grown up without that representation in her everyday life.

“I grew up with my dad, but I didn’t get to grow up with my extended Indigenous family. And there have been times when I’ve felt like an outsider to my own culture. And that’s not within acceptance from those people, but more so a lack of understanding from my part. I can relate to Emily on this front.

“There’re also the intense admiration, love and pride that she has for being Indigenous as well. It’s really cool to have a First Nations story and a First Nations protagonist.

“The film is like a classic bogeyman tale but with an Indigenous spin on it. Chris Broadbent, the writer and co-director, did a lot of research into the Indigenous culture and made sure that this film was respectful. I don’t think there’s one myth or creature that he is basing this story off, more so pulling inspiration from,” she clarifies.

Ahead of her appearance as part of the exclusive It Will Find You panel at Sydnova, Day discusses what she is looking forward to experiencing at the con.

“It will be my first time attending a Supanova; I’m excited to people-watch. Just seeing all the different kinds of people and creatives who are going to be there. Like them, I’m a gamer, too. My favourite video game is Horizon Zero Dawn. I played that when it came out a while ago. I feel like second to that is probably Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but I frequent Overwatch, like a lot,” she smiles.

Catch Kylah and the creative team behind It Will Find You at 11am on Sunday at the Supanova Seminars Stage in Sydney this weekend!
