Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No Supa-Fans, it’s the brand-new trailer for one of the most anticipated films of 2025! It’s been 86 years since DC’s big blue boy scout first flew his way into people’s hearts on the pages of Action Comics #1, and since then he has gone on to become the world’s best-known and most beloved superhero.
Serving as the first live-action outing in the revamped DC Universe, Superman blasts its way into cinemas worldwide on July 10, 2025. While that may seem like a long way off, director and DC Studios boss James Gunn has just helped ease the wait and left us all salivating with a new teaser trailer practically guaranteed to leave even the most battle-weary Kryptonian with goosebumps.
To make things even more Super, ahead of this week’s teaser release we were lucky enough to participate in a Q&A with Gunn, who helped break down some of the new trailer’s biggest reveals. But before we launch into what DC’s new head honcho had to say about his spine-tingling trailer, be sure to check it out below:
Front and centre in Gunn’s new Superman teaser is the latest star to don Supes’ famous red cape, Twisters’ David Corenswet. Following in the imposing footsteps of other much loved onscreen Kal-Els such as Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, Henry Cavill, and 2025 Supa-Star guest Tyler Hoechlin, Corenswet looks every bit the kind of Superman fans grew up idolising. Declaring him “one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with”, Gunn has nothing but praise for the efforts of his new Superman.
“David has that optimistic boy scout quality that Superman has,” Gunn explains. “Both on screen and in real life. He’s frank and a real down-to-earth guy. Besides the fact that he’s this incredibly good-looking guy, he doesn’t have any sort of arrogance or ego in any way. But also, he is a really phenomenally trained actor.”
And that training will likely come in handy, as the trailer hints that this new Superman will find himself in one of the most daunting positions the Last Son of Krypton has ever faced. Shown battered and broken, Gunn’s new teaser suggests that Superman’s boundless optimism is something that has become foreign to many in a less caring world.
“Superman is this symbol of really old-fashioned values,” Gunn says. “Of hope and mum and apple pie, and that’s been a bit battered over years, both that concept of Superman and the concept of just kindness in general. I think that this is about letting that be what it is and allowing those traditional values to, you know, manifest themselves in a completely new world.”
“This isn’t Superman dealing with hope and optimism in light times,” he elaborates. “He’s dealing with hope and optimism in very difficult, hard times. Dark times.”
Yet as dark as things may seem, this new trailer offers fans so much to smile about, and it’s hard to go past the iconic theme song first composed by the legendary John Williams for 1978’s Superman. In a Kryptonian-sized task befitting the Man of Steel himself, the job of putting a fresh spin on the new Superman score went to none other than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Suicide Squad composer John Murphy.
“As soon I finished the script, he was one of the first people I gave a script to,” Gunn says of Murphy. “I said, ‘Start thinking of music for this. The one thing I’ll say is I do want to use the classic Williams score, but I want you to turn it and mutate it and turn it into your own thing that will represent this film and this story.’”
“A lot of times I’ve used a lot of pop songs of various types throughout my movies,” he continues. “And this is not the case for Superman. It is basically all about the score and so it has an incredibly important role in this film.”
And if Murphy’s take on Williams’ score isn’t enough to get you ready to leap a tall building in a single bound, even the most cynical inhabitant of the Phantom Zone can’t help but beam when Krypto makes his heroic leap to the rescue, who’s based on Gunn’s own real-life rescue dog Ozu!
“There’s one really kind of potent line to me in the trailer that moves me,” Gunn explains. “[Superman] says, ‘Krypto, take me home,’ and Krypto starts dragging Superman home.
“And that’s, at the end of the day, what this is for me. It’s bringing the innate goodness of Superman, bringing it home, bringing our battered world to a brighter place of healing and bringing that home.
“Hopefully Superman can be a symbol of that as well. I think that this is the right time for this movie and I’m excited about people seeing the trailer. I just can’t wait for people to see [the movie] in July.”
With seven more months left to go, not even kryptonite chains and red sun generators would be enough to dampen our anticipation for 2025’s Superman. In the meantime, we’ll be sure to rewatch this new trailer with a degree of obsession that would likely put Lex Luthor to shame.
