Dr. Paul Mason (DVA) is a comic book illustrator and writer for Frew Publications, publishers of The Phantom in Australia since 1948.
Paul illustrates Kid Phantom, an all-ages newsstand comic and trade paperback series written by Andrew Constant, featuring The Phantom on adventures as a young boy. Paul is also a writer and illustrator for The Phantom, chronicling stories of the character during the Vietnam war. The first story of The Phantom: Vietnam debuted January 2019 in The Phantom 2019 Annual: The Phantom at War, with more in development for release in 2019/2020. He has also illustrated the Kid Phantom campaign on upcoming boardgame release The Phantom: Treasures of Drakon.
Paul pencilled and inked The Eldritch Kid: Bone War, a supernatural-western graphic novel, and a Talgard short story for Gary Proudley’s graphic novel series, published by Gestalt Comics.
Paul created The Soldier Legacy comic book series, published by Black House Comics — which once featured on national TV as part of a Youi Insurance ad campaign, and has worked on other titles such as Dark Detective: Sherlock Holmes with writer Christopher Sequeira, and The New Adventures of the Human Fly, based on the 1970s Marvel Comic character. The Soldier Legacy is celebrating its 10th Anniversary in 2019 by appearing in The SuperAustralians comic book anthology, curated by Sequeira and published by Black House.
A lecturer for the Griffith Film School since 2012, Paul teaches animation pre-production, art direction, visual story/story boarding, and comics courses in the Bachelor of Animation program, helping to oversee developing graduating animated films, undergrad illustrative projects, and honour year students that attend the University. Griffith Film School Animation was ranked the no. 1 Animation school in Australia, and 8th in the world in the 2019 Animation Career Review.
In his spare time, Paul enjoys kickboxing and taekwon-do. A 4th Degree black belt, Paul has competed in 5 World I.T.F Taekwon-do Championships, winning medals in sparring, team power breaking and team patterns. He was also the assistant/sparring coach for Team Australia in 2014, and 2017.
