Mark Sexton is an illustrator and writer who has worked in films and in comics for far too long a time for it to be “just a phase”, as his parents hoped.
Way back in the 1990s, he quit a PhD in Genetics to follow the dream of being a comic book writer and artist. Together with fellow creator John Petropoulos, he formed AAARGH! Comics which produced the titles Bug & Stump and the infamous TISM.
Somehow Bug & Stump proved rather popular, winning a number of awards and a smaller number of fans – but fate had other plans. The now infamous TISM comic was rather dramatically withdrawn from sale a mere twenty four hours after release. Mark and John received a rap over their knuckles and were banned from distributing comics. AAARGH! Comics was kaput and Mark was unemployed and without the money to pay for the next week’s rent…
So it was ironic that the work he’d done on the banned TISM comic got Mark a gig as a storyboard artist on the cult film Dark City the very next week. Phew!
Since then, Mark has become a sought-after storyboard artist and illustrator for film. He’s worked on – amongst others – Mad Max: Fury Road, Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones and Happy Feet. Recently he’s worked on Black Panther, Antman and the Wasp and the eagerly awaited Thor: Love & Thunder for Marvel Entertainment, and has just finished up on Furiosa, the prequel to Fury Road.
In his limited spare time, Mark has worked on several comic book titles including Judge Dredd for 2000AD and the Mad Max: Fury Road comics for DC/Vertigo.
When Mark occasionally emerges from his studio, he discovers that he still lives in Sydney and really should get out more.
