Lloyd Owen stars in Amazon Prime’s hugely successful The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power playing ‘Elendil’, the legendary forefather of Aragorn (played by Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson’s acclaimed feature films). Series one of The Rings of Power prequel series broke viewership records for the streamer as nearly 100 million people worldwide watched the first series and Amazon confirmed it to be their biggest premiere of all time.
Lloyd’s screen appearances are vast and varied including William Heelis, husband of Renée Zellweger’s beloved author Beatrix Potter in Miss Potter, the lead in Viva Laughlin for CBS and Sony Pictures alongside Hugh Jackman, as well as roles in the NBC/Sky production of You, Me and the Apocalypse with Rob Lowe, and the hugely popular BBC series Monarch of the Glen. Lloyd also starred as Professor Jones Snr in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, playing a young Sean Connery who had made the character famous in the preceding movies. Other notable credits include: Commander Nathan Walker in Apollo 18, as well as the cult TV comedy Coupling. Lloyd also has a significant following in India after his leading role in the Bollywood blockbuster The Thugs of Hindostan starring alongside Aamir Khan and Amithab Bachchan, for which he learned Urdu.
He has a long and highly respected international career in theatre, encompassing leading roles at the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Donmar Warehouse, Almeida and the Young Vic. In the West End, Lloyd starred alongside Dame Diana Rigg and David Suchet in the award-winning production of Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf?; in Patrick Marber’s hugely acclaimed Closer and played the title role in the stage musical The Bodyguard at The Adelphi. He also co-starred with Matthew Perry in The End of Longing, and with Imelda Staunton in the award-winning Good People. Most recently he appeared in the sold-out run of the acclaimed comedy, Noises Off by Michael Frayn at The Garrick theatre.
Lloyd is next set to take centre stage in David Edgar’s political drama The New Real at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). In this panoramic exploration of modern politics, he will embody the role of Larry Yeates, an American political strategist who finds himself embroiled in the presidential campaign of a fictional former communist Eastern European country.
Lloyd also directed the short film Bounce, in collaboration with Oscar winner Alex Dinelaris (Birdman), which was part of the official selection for the Dublin Film Festival in 2022.
