Jed Brophy is a dynamic and talented actor whose career spans over four decades and encompasses more than 150 productions across film, television and theatre. From the beginning of Jed’s acting career, he has shown a remarkable ability to inhabit diverse characters across genres. Whether in a dramatic role, a creature performance, or as a stunt performer, he has consistently demonstrated an unmatched adaptability and dedication to his craft. Renowned for his versatility, Brophy has become a staple in the entertainment industry and a familiar face to fans worldwide.
A defining aspect of Jed’s career is his long-standing collaboration with Academy Award-winning director Peter Jackson. Jed has played a greater number of roles in his films than any other actor. This partnership began in the early 1990s with Jackson’s cult horror-comedy Braindead (1992), in which Brophy played the unforgettable zombie Void. He continued working with Jackson in Heavenly Creatures (1994) and later appeared in King Kong (2005) and in District 9 (2009). Jed also worked with both Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg in The Adventures of Tintin (2011). Jackson has described Brophy as, “Simply a great performer…an actor of the highest capability.”
Jed became a trusted member of Jackson’s creative team during the making of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, both of which involved intensive work with Wētā Digital. He played multiple roles—sometimes even within the same film—thanks to his physical discipline, stunt expertise, motion-capture experience, and his ability to embody creatures under extensive prosthetic and makeup. In The Lord of the Rings trilogy, he portrayed a Nazgûl, two notable orcs- Snaga and Sharku, an elf, a Rohan captain, the Witch King’s dresser, a Gondorian knight, and many others. In The Hobbit trilogy, he took on his most prominent role starring as Nori the dwarf. Jed’s middle-earth experience extended into television with Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, as Vrath.
Outside of his Tolkien work, Brophy has built a robust international resume. He has appeared in such films as Fracture (2004), Second Hand Wedding (2008), The Warrior’s Way (2010), The Dead Room (2010), and Blue Moon (2018). In television, he’s had roles in fantasy and action series such as Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995), Shortland Street (1998), Xena: Warrior Princess (2000), The Legend of the Seeker (2009), The Shannara Chronicles (2016), The Men Who Built America: Frontiersmen (2018), and The Luminaries (2020).
