Austen Mengler is a concept artist, illustrator and graphic novelist from Perth, WA. He loves creating horrific science fiction, fantasy and pop culture parody artworks.
Austen has over 10 years experience working freelance with international clients in the entertainment industry. He has designed and illustrated characters and creatures for comics, graphic novels, feature films, video games, art books, album covers, tabletop games & more!
Working both traditionally and digitally, Austen has been developing his original artwork series for over a decade since graduating Curtin University with a Bachelor of Arts: Design (Major in Illustration). Sharing his artwork online as well in print at conventions, Austen’s unique style of comedic, dark, otherworldly and surreal artworks have been celebrated nationally since 2013. His Pop Horror parody digital paintings have been seen by celebrities such as George R. R. Martin, Millie Bobby Brown, Elijah Wood, Ricky Gervais, Robert Englund, Nick Frost and Jason Momoa (To name a few!).
His main artwork series are Pop Horror, Execution, My Shadows and Scary Sketches. Austen has also performed live demo creature design workshops showing his digital artwork process at various events and contributed to panel talks. His YouTube videos and commentary on Photoshop painting process have inspired other artists and fans alike worldwide.
Austen has recently remastered his self-published art book My Shadows: Volume 01, which has been a best seller at past conventions around Australia. The first edition of his original self-published graphic novel, Execution Volume 01: Awakening (2022) quickly sold out, with its second edition available now!
Client work includes designing the title creature for the independent Australian horror film The Faceless Man (2019) by Chapter 5 Studios. In 2020, Austen also created and donated his painting “Escape” to be included in the Australia Burns graphic novel project and the From Ashes charity zine to join other artists in offering support for the bushfires. Other past clients include: Good Games, Fremantle Arts Centre, Pogo, Posthuman Studios, Within Destruction, Encounter Table Publishing, Fringe Games, Method To Madness Studios, The Australian Water Corp, Winterfold, Ferocious Mind and more.
