Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle dropped yesterday and in commemoration of its 1995 predecessor, we’ve made a list of five epic movies from the same year you should revisit before checking out the new Dwayne Johnson-led blockbuster.
Stock up on nostalgia and get excited for Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle.
Toy Story
It’s hard to believe that this iconic movie was released over two decades ago, but it’s clear the impact that Toy Story has had spans generations. Led by the fantastic voices of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, Toy Story introduced two of Disney and Pixar’s most lovable characters – Woody and Buzz Lightyear – and with another sequel planned for 2019, looks like this dynamic duo will be gracing our screens for a little while longer yet.
Fun fact: Toy Story was in fact co-written by fandom-favourite Joss Whedon who, alongside his fellow screenwriters, won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
Pocahontas
Another smash hit from Disney and controversy aside, the music alone from Pocahontas is enough to make it a timeless classic. With its lessons about the environment, its messages have never been more important than now.
Fun Fact: Christian Bale played a small role in Pocahontas as Thomas, one of John Smith’s close friends
Batman Forever
Supa-Star alumnus, Val Kilmer replaced Michael Keaton in this fun-filled, memorable third instalment of the first Batman film series. With a star-studded supporting cast including Tommy Lee Jones (who younger comic fans may know better as Colonel Chester Phillips in Captain America: The First Avenger) and the hilariously camp Jim Carrey as Two-Face and The Riddler.
Fun Fact: Director Joel Schumacher stated in an interview a few years after the movie that Michael Jackson lobbied hard for the role of The Riddler, but was turned down and the role was later given to Jim Carrey.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
This classic movie is sure to make any ’80s or ’90s kid nostalgic. Based on the 1994 television show of the same name, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie brought its beloved characters to the big screen for one and a half hours of action-packed fun.
Fun Fact: two of the film’s stars – Jason David Frank (The White Ranger) and Johnny Yong Bosch (The Black Ranger) – have recently travelled Down Under as Supanova’s very own Supa-star guests.
Jumanji
Last, but definitely not least, is ’90s favourite Jumanji. Jumanji has had a lasting legacy, inspiring not only a television series, but also the film Zathura: A Space Adventure and a number of video games.
Fun Fact: in 2014, a Jumanji gameboard prop used in the movie was sold in an eBay auction for $60,800 USD.
