The highly anticipated sequel to Overwatch was announced back in 2019 and, although some gameplay videos have surfaced online, little is known about the upcoming release.
During his most recent trip to Australia for Supanova 2020 – Melbourne and Gold Coast, voice acting maestro Gaku Space shared details with fans about what to expect.
“All I can say is we have started recording for Overwatch 2 and it is really fun and you guys just have to wait. And, as you guys know, there will be more stories, so it is going to be really fun,” he said.
“I think they are still going to add more stories and so they will call us to record more. It is not like we record everything in one go, so we don’t really know much. I asked the director to tell me, but they don’t really trust me because I always tell people. I am pretty much the Tom Holland of the Overwatch world.”
It’s through his role as Genji in Blizzard’s hit series Overwatch that Space found pop culture fame and became an idol to many. But voice acting isn’t as easy as some might assume.
“With Overwatch, I get the script the day before, so the voice acting is very quick,” he explained. “You have to make character choices very quickly. With movies and TV shows you see the scripts and view the character arc, but with voice acting you don’t see that and so you have to act right away.”
Space has had many roles and played a variety of characters throughout his acting career, starring in How I Met Your Mother, Westworld and more, but none quite like Genji; a character many fans would love to see Space portray in a live-action setting.
“I am ready,” he joked. “I am training, you know. I doubt it though. It would be very tough to make it live-action. Overwatch 2 is coming, so it would be a long wait, maybe like 10 years or so, and I would be too old. If it happened right now, then yeah. I love being Genji.”
