The Best Games To Get You Started In VR

Written by Nena Serafimovska - August 21, 2018Daniel Cribb

Gaming is one of the fastest growing and most popular aspects of Virtual Reality (VR), with the ability to transport players into fully immersive and interactive worlds directly from the safety of their own living room. As more and more high-quality head mounted displays continue to pop up in the market and prices plunge, VR is fast becoming the new trend in gaming.

With hundreds of adventures to choose from, we’ve put together a short list of the top VR games to help you get started.

The Climb

Oculus Rift

The Climb is an excellent example of how VR can replicate real-world experience. In this case, friends can get together from anywhere in the world and scale Vietnam’s Halong Bay or the Arctic Circle, and feel like they’re all right there slogging it out on the cliff face together. The visuals are stunningly realistic (and so is the vertigo) so be sure to chart your path as you would rock climbing in the real world, or you’ll start to feel the onset of anxiety as you run out of holds!

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Playstation VR

Virtual reality gaming was made for horror, and no franchise does it better than Resident Evil. You’ll be treated to an utterly immersive house of horrors where creatures lurk behind every door, lights flicker just enough to illuminate the monsters coming at you, and there’s just enough of a pause in the action to hear your heart pumping in your chest. It’s an incredibly tense and epic experience for anyone who loves to be scared out of his/her wits. Sure, all the action is contained inside the one house, but you’ll find yourself losing hours exploring the labyrinth of terrifying rooms, hallways and crannies. Best have a fresh pair of underpants ready for this one.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew

Playstation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive

There’s a lack of choice when it comes to virtual reality multiplayer games. Thankfully, Star Trek: Bridge Crew allows players to compete with, and play alongside, one another. In this space adventure, you and your crew will have a chance to band together, pilot the Federation Starship as you search the outer galaxy for safe harbor and come up with strategies to defeat the Klingon empire. A highly strategic game for friends who work well together in high-pressure environments and can agree on who’s going to be captain!

Skyrim: Edler Scrolls V

Oculus Rift and HTC Vive

One of the most popular games out there, Skyrim packs a mean punch in VR. With massive, sprawling worlds for players to conquer and complete freedom to play however you want, it’s very easy to lose yourself in Skyrim for hours. Not only is it a fully immersive world, but also it’s a fully physical experience meaning that you really need to be standing in order to get the most out of the battles and journey. Gamers have reported losing weight playing this one, so prepare for a full body workout. Ultimately, your quest is to defeat a world-eating dragon, but you can just as easily spend your time exploring and completing side missions for in-game townspeople.

Robinson: The Journey

Oculus Rift and HTC Vive

Robinson: The Journey is the ultimate in otherworldly travel experience. If adventure and exploration is what you’re after then this is THE game to get you there. As Robin, you’ll be plunged into a magical (yet realistic) planet filled with dinosaurs and alien plant life, which you’re forced to navigate in order to find out where you are, what happened on the planet and how to plot your escape. For fans of Jurassic Park this is an absolute must; not only will you get to interact with dinosaurs you’ll also have to run for your life! The only downside is that gameplay last four-six hours, but honestly, it’s worth it for the visuals and dinosaurs alone.

Defector

Oculus Rift

Defector feels like a slick spy training exercise and definitely panders to fans of James Bond and Mission Impossible. This a no hold barred, undercover spy thriller has players using advanced weaponry, cutting-edge tech and deception techniques to deaf the enemy. The fate of every mission will be guided by your choices, and will require you to think and work fast to outmanoeuvre your opponents and accomplish your mission. Fist fights, ridiculous stunts, wild car chases, Defector is an exhilarating and death-defying adventure.
