For most pop culture fanatics, binge-watching is part of the fandom – and it turns out some of our recent Supa-Stars are just as glued to the screen as we are.
With the year drawing to a close, we asked some of the actors from our favourite films and TV series what won them over in 2019.
If you’re looking for your next streaming binge, look no further!
TV
ELIZABETH BLACKMORE (Evil Dead, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries)
Chernobyl
“I thought it was masterful television. I liked the detail in that script, the way that they shot it. It was just beautiful, beautiful TV making. I really, really loved it and it felt a bit like a monster film, with this incredible view of the reactor breaking down at the end. I just thought it was really great. And all the performances were wonderful as well, of course.”
LINDA BALLANTYNE (Sailor Moon, Avengers: United They Stand, Mia and Me)
Peaky Blinders
“Love, love, Peaky Blinders. Love it. The music on it is incredible. The acting is amazing. Love the accents. It’s a great tool for actors, you know, if you want to learn any kind of British accent whatsoever, it’s all there for you.”
BRITTANY LAUDA (Dr. Stone, Darling in the FranXX, Made in Abyss)
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
“I really liked Kimetsu no Yaiba, the Demon Slayer anime. I thought that was really cool, but that in the end, it did start to get a little boring, which was unfortunate. That one was really cool, though.”
MARK STRICKSON (Doctor Who)
Schitt’s Creek
“I actually don’t really watch much TV, but I binge-watched it on the plane coming over here, and the acting is fantastic, and I really, really enjoyed it.”
JULIE BENZ (Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dexter, Defiance)
You and Years and Years
“The show You, I loved that, was obsessed! For me, watching You, it felt like I was watching a young Dexter, and I didn’t have the same experience watching Dexter as audiences did, so watching You, I felt like I was having that experience. The other show I loved was Years and Years, a British show that ended up on HBO, with Emma Thompson and it’s so good.”
AMY ACKER (Angel, Dollhouse, The Gifted)
Barry
“I love Barry. I have developed my own storyline of characters that I want to play on Barry, that’s how much I love it.”
JEN BROWN (RWBY, Red vs Blue, Camp Camp)
Steven Universe
“My favourite TV show this year, and of all time, because if Steven Universe was around when I was a kid, I feel like the world would be a better place.”
TAYLOR DAVIS (Nightwalkers)
South Park
“[Season 23] has been so hilarious.”
ALISON SUDOL (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald)
Fleabag
“It’s absurdly brilliant and unbelievably strange and wonderful and smart and human and made me cry and made me laugh.”
DEBORAH ANN WOLL (Daredevil, The Punisher, True Blood)
The Handmaid’s Tale
“I love that there’s a strong female protagonist and there’s a lot of other great female characters.”
ADAM TUOMINEN (Power Rangers Ninja Storm/Dino Thunder, A Second Chance)
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
“I just watch it over and over again.”
GREGG SULKIN (Runaways, Faking It, Pretty Little Liars)
Bodyguard
“I love Richard Madden.”
PAUL AMOS (Lost Girl, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, Captain Canuck)
Mindhunter
“It’s really interesting from an actor’s perspective to see why people do what they do.”
MATT SHIPMAN (Dr. Stone, Darling in the FranXX, My Hero Academia)
Dr. Stone
“My gut instinct is Dr. Stone because I’ve really, really been enjoying it and it’s a huge property and it’s playing right now so it’s in my mind.”
FILM
ELIZABETH BLACKMORE
Booksmart
“It’s a really great, lovely film with two girls who are just wonderful in it. I really, really enjoyed that.”
BRITTANY LAUDA
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
“It makes me sound sophisticated. I did think that the movie had such cool cinematography and a lot of style compared to the action flicks that Marvel pumps out. They are enjoyable films, but Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood had a lot of cool cinematography.”
MATT SHIPMAN
Avengers: Endgame
“I feel like the one that sticks out because it was a cultural event is Avengers: Endgame. I’m not even a huge MCU guy, but I made it a point to watch practically every one of the movies before seeing that.”
SEAN PATRICK FLANERY (The Boondock Saints, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles)
The Art of Racing in the Rain
“I have kids, so it drastically limits the films I get to see, but my favourite film this year is The Art of Racing in the Rain. I loved it and it hit all the right notes for me; it was tragic, but I loved it and I didn’t expect to love it so much.”
AMY ACKER
Booksmart
“I was surprised by it and didn’t know what to expect but I really liked it and all the girl power.”
ADAM TUOMINEN
Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Avengers: Endgame
“Godzilla for me, that was awesome. Endgame was really good, too!”
PAUL AMOS
Avengers: Endgame
“I was committed to that universe for a long time and to finally have some closure on a lot of it was big. I thought they did a good job of finishing it.”
ALISON SUDOL
Booksmart
“That movie is fantastic. I think Olivia Wilde has shown herself to be an unbelievably capable director, who made some really interesting choices.”
JEN BROWN
Tigers Are Not Afraid
“It is really stunning and an important magical realism horror film about a lot of the children that were leftover in Mexico from the drug wars. It was beautiful, sad but hopeful, and in my opinion, the most important and best film of the year.”
DEBORAH ANN WOLL
Alien
“This year is Alien’s 40th anniversary. It’s one of my favourite films and they were playing it on the big screen in the States, so I went and I watched it on the big screen. That is my pick for best movie for this year.”
GREGG SULKIN
Spider-Man: Far From Home
“Tom Holland’s so good and I love seeing young English actors do well.”
KATIE GRIFFIN
Avengers: Endgame
“I’m a huge Marvel fan.”
TAYLOR DAVIS
Joker
“It’s just so different to all the other ones and it has a very Scorsese flavour to it.”
