Morgan Garrett Offers Up Voice Acting Tips At Supanova Adelaide

Texas voice actor Morgan Garrett has become an anime icon through her roles as Rico Brzenska on Attack on Titan, Akira Mado on Tokyo Ghoul and more, and part of her success might have something to do with her attention to detail.

Stopping by Supanova TV in Adelaide to speak with host Bec, Garrett stressed the importance of accent and really getting into character.

“I had a year of ‘how to learn an accent in three days’ at grad school. If you pick French, then there are five distinct things that will make you passable. The ‘r’s are completely different because they’re way back in the throat, so then you just learn the five and then start talking with those five things.”

She’s quite fond of doing a French accent, but her favourite voice to date may surprise some fans.

“Does a 13-year-old boy count?” she laughs. “A lot of the time when I’m in the booth, depending on what I’m being – like if I’m a General in an army or I’m the Demon Lord of Lust – you take the stance of that thing that you’re in the booth.

“So, if you’re being a General in an army, you stand like a General,” she says standing up, “You’ve got the broad chest and you’re at attention.”

“If you’re a 13-year-old boy, though, how do you stand? I tucked my tummy in and stood like this the entire time,” she says, slouching over like a moody teen, “because it compresses and gives you that little gravely thing. Your body position will help you get into character, or develop a character.”

While she admits to not yet mastering the Australian accent, she does have her Siri set to one, helping her slowly master that Down Under twang.
