Whilst New Year’s resolutions are often about making serious life changes, they don’t always have to be. Why not set fun goals that you can easily stick to? Take the time to explore new realms or check out a fandom and see what all the fuss is about. Here are some ideas to help get your geek on in 2018!
TABLETOP AND CARD GAMES
With more stores bringing in card-based games, franchises such as Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering are rapidly becoming more mainstream, so if you’ve never given these a go, the time is now. Not only is it easier on the eye strain than video games, but it can also be social with a few local game stores hosting game days and tournaments. Cards and other tabletop games are often played at Supanova too so there’s a great chance to learn from experienced players and make new friends.
JOIN A LARP GROUP
Ever wanted to live the adventure? You can by joining a Live Action Role-Play (LARP) group. There are many LARP groups around Australia – a quick Google search will help you locate your nearest. Join warbands, go on epic quests and create your own character! It’s also a great social outing and provides exercise.
GAME ON!
Don’t want to leave the comfort of your chair? There’s always gaming galore! Be it PC Master Race or console for life, and now even Virtual Reality (VR) gaming, there are plenty of options to choose. Try your hand at multiplayer online, or if you’re a veteran tired of today’s offerings, you can always take on retro gaming that’s making a comeback, or test out your flippers with pinball at pinball tournaments and clubs.
COSPLAY DREAMS? JUST DO IT!
Every cosplayer has that dream Cosplay (Costume Role-Play), and 2018 is as good as any year to do it – so DO IT! Never entered the Supanova Cosplay Competition before? Make it the year that you give it a shot. Show off those rad costume-making skills and get into character. Many have made lifelong friends within the competition circuit and can help by sharing tips to improve.
GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR CON WEEKEND
Love that Supanova feeling? Make a whole weekend of it. Pick up an event guide and highlight all the things you want to see and do. Get involved in activities like Supanova’s Supahero Parade on the Gold Coast. Or perhaps consider volunteering if you’ve never done it before. There’s plenty of ways to get more involved.
Whether you choose any of these suggestions or discover a new fandom, we wish you a Supa 2018!
