Marking one of Netflix’s biggest and most spectacular productions to date, this holiday season will see sci-fi fans of all stripes taken for an epic journey into the stars courtesy of the first installment in the groundbreaking Rebel Moon saga. With heart-racing action sequences, breathtaking visuals and cutting-edge special effects, Netflix and visionary filmmaker Zack Snyder are set to deliver a revolutionary new addition to one of the most beloved cinematic genres to grace viewer’s screens.
When Kora (Sofia Boutella), a young soldier with a mysterious past, seeks atonement among the peaceful colonists on the agricultural planet of Veldt, she soon finds that there is no escaping the brutal and oppressive grip of the Imperium. Trading a life of death and destruction for the idyllic fields and annual harvests on a backwater moon on the very edge of the galaxy, Boutella’s young heroine is faced with the prospect of seeing her adopted homeworld suffer the same fate she once helped deliver onto countless others.
However, with the threat of Imperium’s might hanging over the heads of Veldt’s ill-prepared and largely peaceful populace, Kora sets out on a dangerous quest to recruit a ragtag group of Rebels from across the galaxy to help liberate her new homeland. What follows is but the first step in an epic new tale delivered on scale unlike anything Netflix has ever attempted previously. With sword-wielding cyborgs, valiant robots, hardened mercenaries and malevolent despots, this new space epic will see a tale of mythic proportions unfold against an incredible and intricately detailed sci-fi backdrop.
Featuring an all-star cast drawing talent from all four corners of the globe, Boutella’s Kora is joined by the likes of Charlie Hunnam, Ed Skrein, Djimon Hounsou, Fra Fee, Ray Fisher, and even cinematic legend Sir Anthony Hopkins as the voice of Jimmy, the sole surviving member of a race of robotic knights who once served under the galaxy’s fallen king.
Making Rebel Moon a truly global viewing experience, the cast is also rounded out by the likes of South Korean star Bae Doona, Dutch actor Michiel Huisman, Iceland’s Ingvar Sigurdsson and even our own homegrown Aussie actors Charlotte Maggi and Cleopatra Coleman.
Suggesting that he “really just wanted to make a giant atmospheric space adventure,” director Zack Snyder has dug deep into a veritable treasure trove of cinematic classics in his quest to deliver a story he has been quietly developing over the last 20 years. Snyder revealed that he “always loved this idea of these underdog teams going against impossible odds,” and Kora’s own eclectic group of space-faring heroes are bound to leave their own lasting impression of viewers for years to come.
Moreover, with Snyder’s incredible attention to detail and sophisticated worldbuilding skills, the director has also promised that his approach to Rebel Moon would “leave no stone unturned and go as far as [he] could”. Between inventing entire alien languages and alphabets, to designing a whole new range of sci-fi weaponry and unique space faring vehicles, the filmmaker has sown the seeds for an extra-ordinary new sci-fi universe which he hopes will continue to provide a potential setting for many more tales to come.
Armed with an exciting premise, an extraordinary international cast and impressive production values, Netflix’s burgeoning Rebel Moon franchise promises to fulfill the term “epic” in practically every sense of the word.
