From film to TV, gaming to comics and everything in between, here’s what you might have missed in pop culture news this week.
TV
The first glimpse of Game Of Thrones season eight has arrived in a mixed montage of HBO shows labelled ‘coming soon’. Though that may be an overstatement for GoT, the new footage provides hope that the wait is shorter than we have been told.
Upcoming Netflix series The Haunting Of Hill House has received an October 12 release date, alongside a range of promo images. Based on Shirley Jackson’s 1959 gothic ghost story of the same name, the show boasts a cast of familiar faces including Michiel Huisman (Game Of Thrones), Carla Gugino (Gerald’s Game) and Kate Siegel (Hush).
Sons Of Anarchy star Ryan Hurst has officially joined The Walking Dead’s upcoming ninth season. Playing Beta, Hurst will be second in command of the Whisperers, a new group who are yet to be introduced from the comics. The Walking Dead season nine will return to AMC on October 7.
A new Arrow poster has arrived, showing Oliver Queen behind bars, beaten and defeated following the result of the season six finale. Season seven is expected to shine a new light on the character, as his identity will be revealed to the public.
As for another Arrow character, a casting breakdown of Lois Lane has revealed crucial details. The breakdown states, “The daughter of a US army general, Lois is tough, principled and dogged… this character will appear in The Flash and Supergirl crossover event.”
The CW has also shared a poster for the upcoming reboot of Charmed, featuring a new trio of magical sisters: Macy (Madeleine Mantock), Mel (Melonie Diaz) and Maggie (Sarah Jeffery). Promising to honour the integrity of the original, the reboot will premiere on October 14.

FILM
The Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, has joined the cast of Star Wars: Episode IX this week, fuelling speculation of possible roles such as Grand Admiral Thrawn amongst fans. The film remains under tight wraps and is currently in production.
Ralph Breaks The Internet has added Australian comedian Hamish Blake to the cast list, playing Pyro, a member of an underground racing crew, reportedly sharing screen time with Gal Gadot’s character, Shank.
Maleficent 2 has wrapped from shooting this week, with the film’s director Joachim Rønning celebrating on Instagram with some photo teasers from the set.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s Big Trouble In Little China project has been talked about for a while now, being reported originally as a remake of the John Carpenter cult hit. It was however revealed this week by the production’s producer, Hiram Garcia, in an interview with Collider, that the project is, in fact, a sequel.
GAMING
Melbourne Esports Open will return September 1 & 2, with Melbourne Park hosting the event. The MEO will feature a huge weekend of competition and activities including the Overwatch Contenders Australia Finals and League of Legends Oceanic Pro League Finals.

Pokémon has beaten Star Wars and Marvel to the top, this week being named the highest grossing media franchise grossing more than $59 billion since 1996. Including the trading card game, countless lines of merchandise and even an anime and manga series, Pokémon has gained a reputation with its representation in almost every form of media.
ANIME
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind has uploaded a new trailer this week, centralising on new character Leone Abbacchio ahead of its October 6 air date.
COMICS
A new digital comic book subscription service is coming to Nintendo Switch in November. InkyPen will be available via Nintendo eShop where subscribers will have access to their entire catalogue including titles from IDW, Dynamite, Valiant, Les Humanoïdes Associés and Andrews McMeel.
Legendary comic book artist Russ Heath has passed away at age 91. Heath is well known for his tenure during the war and Western era of comics in the 1950s including titles Arizona Kid and Two-Gun Kid from Timely Comics and DC’s Our Army At War and G.I. Combat. Heath was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2009.
DC has a new daily news show for their DC Universe streaming service. DC Daily will offer daily news and insights into DC comics, TV, movies and more! The show will debut August 30 (AUS time) and will be hosted by none other than Kevin Smith!
SAD NEWS FOR MELBOURNE COMIC READERS: Legendary Melbourne comic book store Classic Comics has announced it will be closing its doors at the end of the year. Store owner Giuseppe posted the unfortunate news on the shop’s Facebook page. A staple of the Melbourne comic community, the homely and warm alleyway location will turn off its lights for the last time in December after 25 years of business. Our own comic book news writer will be found there every Wednesday on new comic book day swapping war stories and processing the stages of grief.
