Dr. Paul Mason is a comic book illustrator, and writer/illustrator of The Soldier Legacy; an Australian action/adventure comic book series and trade paperback that was published by Black House Comics from 2011 to 2014.
A Doctor in Visual Arts, he is also a sessional lecturer in drawing, visual storytelling and sequential art at the Queensland College of Arts, Griffith University.
In late 2011, Paul’s comic series and character featured in a national TV commercial campaign for Youi Insurance (an event that captured the notice of comics fans internationally via ‘Bleeding Cool news’).
He has been published in titles such as the newsagent comic series Dark Detective: Sherlock Holmes (by writer Christopher Sequeira and illustrator Phil Cornell (for Black House Comics), the Cthulhu: Deep Down Under anthology, Supanova Expo’s Tides of Hope, ComicOZ’s Oi Oi Oi #4 and upcoming anthology Australia!, and the US release of The New Adventures of The Human Fly #1, based on the 1970s Marvel Comics character, and real life masked stuntman.
He is currently working on a number of different projects, including an unannounced project with Gestalt publishing, and the third volume trade paperback of his Soldier Legacy series.
Paul has also had his comic book illustrations on display in a number of exhibitions, such as the 5th Jilin International Animation and Comics exhibition in China, the 25th Anniversary of Griffith Film School Animation exhibition 2012, and the Shadow of the Mouse animation and comic art exhibition in Brisbane 2013.
As well as his university lecturing, Paul also teaches comic book workshops and seminars for children, teens and young adults. He has conducted classes for organisations such as the State Library of Queensland, Brisbane Square Library on behalf of the Brisbane City Council, at The Grid on behalf of Toowoomba City Library, The Grove Library in Perth, Western Australia, as well as art demos in stores for Mepxy Markers. He also co-hosts an all-inclusive Monthly Comic Book/pop culture-style Meetup group for Brisbane Square Library, which has been running for over 12 months.
As an aside, Paul competes in I.T.F. Taekwon-do, notably in 5 World I.T.F. Taekwon-do Championships, winning a bronze medal in Team Power Breaking in 2005, and an individual bronze in Hyper-weight Sparring in Birmingham, UK 2007. After competing in the 2013 World Championships in London, he was the assistant/sparring coach for Team Australia, and competed at the Unified World Championships in Tuscany, Italy 2014.
Paul looks forward to meeting all his fans in Brisbane in November 2015, and will participate in signing sessions on Friday (2:30pm to 5:30pm), and throughout Saturday (10.30am to 5.30pm) and Sunday (11am to 5pm).
