If you aren’t familiar with Supa-Star Phil LaMarr himself, you almost certainly would have heard his voice. With over 500 credits under his belt, the Supa-Star has lent his voice to some of the greatest animated projects of all time.
Before LaMarr boards the Planet Express for Supanova in Melbourne (6-7 April) and Supanova on the Gold Coast (13-14 April), we take a look at some of his most iconic voice roles.
IN BRIGHTEST DAY, IN STATIC NIGHT, NO OCEAN-DWELLER WILL ESCAPE HIS SIGHT!
Perhaps one of his most iconic roles of all time is as the Green Lantern/John Stewart in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, however, this wasn’t LaMarr’s first appearance in the DC Animated Universe. LaMarr starred as Static/Virgil Hawkins in Static Shock, which marked the first appearance of the Justice League in the DCAU.
Since his contribution to the top shelf of DC animation, LaMarr has gone on to voice Aquaman in Young Justice and the Injustice: Gods Among Us videogames, Barry Allen’s Flash in DC Superhero Girls, Black Manta in Harley Quinn, a handful of characters in various LEGO DC Superhero properties, and as the definite voice of John Stewart in countless DC adaptations.
INTO THE MARVEL ANIMATED UNIVERSE
Best known for his heroes in the DC Universe, LaMarr has proven that he has a dark and sinister side with his contribution to the Marvel Animated Universe. Most regularly appearing as Dormammu across various Marvel properties, LaMarr’s rich voice has been borrowed by characters such as Green Goblin, Nick Fury, War Machine, Black Panther, Blade, and countless others across mediums such as Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Ultimate Spider-Man and several LEGO Marvel properties.
(SAMURAI) JACK OF ALL TRADES
Starring in the show of the same name, LaMarr is Samurai Jack, leading the journey backward through time to defeat the villainous Aku before he can assume control of the world. LaMarr lends his voice to hundreds of minor characters throughout the show and various videogames too, highlighting his vocal range and ability to juggle multiple characters in the same setting.
THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE
When he isn’t threatening the stability of the world or traveling backward through time to prevent a grave danger, LaMarr’s acting chops can be found in the midst of an intergalactic war between the Sith and the Jedi.
Most recognisable as the humble Kit Fisto, LaMarr has also voiced Senator Bail Organa, Commander TX-TO of the Separatist Droid Army, and the sometimes-goofy sometimes-sabotaging Jar Jar Binks.
With prevalent roles in The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, The Bad Batch, The Book of Boba Fett, and various LEGO Star Wars properties, LaMarr has lent his voice to several iconic characters in a galaxy far, far away, making his mark on Star Wars history.
TEAM WORKIN’ TO MAKE THE DREAMWORKS
DreamWorks is responsible for some of the most loveable co-stars in animation history. Eddie Murphy’s walking, talking Donkey in the Shrek franchise sets the precedent for goofy sidekicks. Moving it over to Madagascar, there are few performances as iconic as Chris Rock’s Marty in the Madagascar franchise.
Outside of the blockbuster films, however, if you’ve seen our favourite four-legged heroes in any other medium, chances are that it’s Phil LaMarr’s voicework. Whether it’s the most colourful Zebra of the Afro Circus in the Madagascar 2 and 3 videogames, or Shrek’s noble steed in theme park attractions and videogames, LaMarr’s take on these characters honours the preceding talent while breathing life in his own way into these characters.
SWEET VOICES OF FUTURAMA!
We couldn’t forget about LaMarr’s starring role in the hit series Futurama! Leading as Hermes Conrad, LaMarr has lent his voice to several adaptations of the character from the original show, to Bender’s Big Score, The Beast with a Billion Backs, and Bender’s Game. Alongside Hermes, LaMarr has voiced several minor characters across the various projects, including various robots like Billionaire Bot, Preacherbot and Ben Rodriguez.
