Sean Maher (born April 16, 1975 in Pleasantville, New York) is best known to his Supanova fans as Simon Tam from the science fiction television series Firefly and follow up movie Serenity. Graduating from Byram Hills High School, Maher trained at New York University where he earned his drama degree in 1997. He acted on stage in several productions, including Yerma and Into the Woods.
Maher starred as the title character, a rookie police officer, on the short-lived TV series Ryan Caulfield: Year One. In 2000 he was one of the main characters on the Fox show The $treet. After the show’s untimely demise, he was cast in the ABC/Disney remake of “Brian’s Song” (2001), playing cancer-stricken football player Brian Piccolo. Hoping for a more stable primetime presence, Mahar next signed on as a member of the crew of the futuristic spaceship Serenity on the sci-fi pilot “Firefly,” from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator Joss Whedon, the rest is history.
Maher went on to reprise his role from Firefly in the 2005 film Serenity. Sean was also cast as a chief resident in a hospital on the new series Halley’s Comet. He appeared in the 2005 Lifetime movie The Dive From Clausen’s Pier as Michelle Trachtenberg’s new love interest. In 2006, he co-starred as John Stamos’s boyfriend in the made-for-television movie Wedding Wars.
Having taken a brief break from acting, Sean came back to TV screens in 2009 as a guest star in Lifetime Television’s pilot episode of Drop Dead Diva, followed by 2010 guest appearances in the second season of The Mentalist on CBS, Fox’s first season of Human Target, and Syfy’s second season of Warehouse 13 with former Firefly co-star and Supanova alum Jewel Staite.
