Samuel Gerald Jones (born August 12, 1954) is an American actor better known by his stage name Sam J. Jones. He has also credited as Sam Jones. He is best known for playing the title character in the 1980 film Flash Gordon.

Jones was born in Chicago and grew up in Sacramento, California. He is a 1972 graduate of Mira Loma High School in Sacramento.

He made his first film appearance opposite Bo Derek in the 1979 romance comedy film 10. His appearance in 10 allowed Jones to beat out actors such as Kurt Russell and Arnold Schwarzenegger to his most famous role to date, that of Flash Gordon in the 1980 film of the same name. Jones dyed his hair blonde for this role. The film also starred Max von Sydow, Timothy Dalton and Brian Blessed. The movie did not succeed at the box office (except in the UK) and the planned trilogy was scrapped.

He played Chris Rorchek in the TV series Code Red, was the lead in a 1987 adaptation of Will Eisner’s comics character The Spirit, and played the title character in the short-lived NBC series The Highwayman, playing the titular character who would travel from town to town in his truck, always looking to save the day.

Jones starred in several straight-to-video movies such as Silent Assassins, Driving Force, Jane and the Lost City, American Tigers, Fist of Honor, a supporting role in cult classic One Man Force (which starred former NFL star John Matuszak), and b-movie classic White Force. Jones’s popularity was in part due to his good looks, his rugged voice and his insistence at performing his own stunt work. In the 1990s, Jones took roles in films such as In Gold We Trust, Enter the Shootfighter, Baja Run, Maximum Force, Hard Vice and Dead Sexy. TV guest roles included The A-Team, Baywatch and Diagnosis Murder.

In 2001, Jones was cast in the Animal Planet’s family series Hollywood Safari as a park ranger. He appeared in “Deadman Switch”, an episode of the television series Stargate SG-1. In 2007, he had a special guest role in playing the prisoner Krebb in the Sci Fi Channel original television series Flash Gordon.

Jones has now semi-retired from movies, forming with his wife Ramona, Inner Cordon Inc., a firm that specialises in corporate security and hostage extraction.

He has however, been returned to the public eye, performing an extended cameo as himself in the 2012 international hit fantasy film comedy, TED which was written and directed by Family Guy’s Seth McFarlane.
