Mark Addy (born 14 January 1964) is an English actor who has worked in television, film and on screen. He is best known for his role in the film The Full Monty and in the television comedy series The Thin Blue Line and Still Standing. One of his more unusual roles is playing iconic US TV character Fred Flintstone in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.
He also played a supporting role as Mac McArthur in the 1998 film Jack Frost, with Michael Keaton. In 2001, he played a butler of Chris Rock’s character in the movie Down to Earth and also appeared in A Knight’s Tale as Roland. Addy played the role of David Philby in The Time Machine and made a guest appearance as the Ship Captain in Around the World in 80 Days with Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan and made an appearance as Friar Tuck in Ridley Scott’s 2010 film Robin Hood.
He starred in HBO’s Game of Thrones as the doomed King Robert Baratheon. He was announced in the role on 19 July 2009.
Addy read the books prior to filming and found it useful to gain insight into the history of his character. He believes the series grounding in creating a realistic world gives it appeal to non-genre viewers. He sees his character as a foot soldier who is not comfortable as a ruler. Addy is from Northern England and used his natural accent while playing Robert.
He is now appearing as the reluctant “hero” Hercules in the new British fantasy drama series Atlantis.
