At the age of six, after only one performance of his school nativity play in which he literally was Shepherd #3, Gary disappeared from acting to get away from that whole scene. But, as we all know, some callings will not be denied. A mere twenty-two years later when Toronto’s fabled Second City Theatre hired him, Gary was heard to utter Michael Corleone’s prophetic words, “Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in!”
From 1995 to 2005, Gary appeared in the coveted role of Chief Master Sergeant Walter Harriman on the smash sci-fi TV hit, ‘Stargate SG:1.’ Rabid sci-fi fan demand to meet Stargate actors such as Gary has enabled him to travel the world and appear in conventions in Germany, France, Australia, New Zealand, England and the U.S. With his unique brand of stand-up comedy and improv, Gary has had fans rolling in the aisles with his behind the scenes stories of the beloved show.
Gary was flown down to San Diego’s Comicon to host a panel discussion between the cast of Stargate and FOUR THOUSAND fans. Gary killed. If you don’t believe him, check out the Special Features section of the Season 10 box set.
Gary currently writes for the hilarious, hit CBC Radio show, ‘The Debaters,’ a show he’s been with since its inception eight years ago.
As an actor, his familiar face has appeared in countless television and film productions, working with legends such as Katherine Hepburn, Nick Nolte and Andre the Seal, one of whom he witnessed eat a bucket of fish a day.
Oh, yeah, almost forgot. Gary fronts a totally improvised jazz trio called The Chip Butcher Quartet. Lyrics improvised, music improvised. Jesus, what was he thinking?
Gary’s humor articles have also appeared in Vancouver Magazine, The Georgia Straight and The National Post.
