How long you have been cosplaying for?

Ye gods now the truth comes out… my first con/cosplaying experience was Supanova 2003… I’ve been cosplaying for seven years. HOWEVER I have been a very inconsistent cosplayer – only one or two costumes (rather dodgy costumes) a year. I enjoyed cosplay but I never put in the hours/love necessary to be REALLY good. This last year I have taken it a whole lot more seriously – this is a personal challenge to see how far I can go and what I can do if I really put my mind to it.

List up to 5 previous costumes you’ve done

  • Misato Katsuragi from Neon Genesis Evangelion – SMASH 2010 (Runner Up Best Group, Runner Up Best Skit)
  • Tamaki (Mad Hatter) from Ouran High School Host Club – SMASH 2009 (Best Skit)
  • Azula from Avatar the Last Airbender – Supanova 2009 (Best Skit)
  • Zombie from ‘Your Nightmares’ – Supanova 2009 (Best Cosplayer)
  • Bellatrix LeStrange from Harry Potter – Supanova 2007 (Runner Up Best Cosplayer)

What does cosplay mean to you and why do you love it?

I adore dark, evil/sexy, sassy, strong characters. My favourite aspect of cosplay has always been the performance – I love prancing around on stage in character. Finishing a skit to applause feels amazing – highly addictive. Walking through a con and seeing surprise, recognition and smiles on people’s faces makes all those hours of blood (I blame those sharp sewing needles), sweat (this summer was painful) and tears (again I blame those needles) oh so worth it.

Cosplay is so creative; you are constantly learning new skills and being inspired. I think most of all though, I love the people. There is such an awesome cosplay community in Australia, people I respect and enjoy spending time with. This is a crazily awesome hobby/lifestyle and attracts the best crazily awesome people – I love it!

What we can expect to see from you at the Grand Final?

Ah let’s see… To my knowledge no one in Australia has cosplayed this particular character before. I will need to learn a whole heap of new techniques to pull off this costume and transporting it to Brisbane is going to be a real challenge. So prepare for something sharp and pointy, feathery and bright…. ^-^
