Rules

As fun at this contest is, there is a serious side to it, follow these simple rules and it'll make for a smooth running and fun contest for everyone involved including yourself, so please have a good read of the rules below!

  1. In order to be able to fit all of our contestants in our allotted time slot there are a limited number of places available for each day of the event. We recommend pre-registering for the contest if you know what you will be cosplaying as at the event. Pre-registered contestants will need to check in on the day, your place will be held in place until 12.00pm on the day of the event. We will also be allowing on the day registration, but places are subject to availability. When spaces are filled you will be put on a reserve list. If spaces become available we will place you in the contest in place of contestants who have not checked in by 12 noon. Results of the waiting list will be made available by 1.30pm at the registration area located in the Main Arena building.

All contestants are to assemble at the bottom of the Madman Anime Arena by 1.35 on Saturday and 2.25pm on Sunday. We will allocate a seating section for all cosplayers.

  2. We allow a wide variety of costumes, however if your costume is deemed too risqué, or inappropriate, then you will not be allowed to participate in the contest and may also be asked to change clothes. If you are uncertain about your costume please email Drew at anime@supanova.com.au or Rena at rena@supanova.com.au to verify and seek permission. While we allow crossplay, if your costume is in anyway derogatory, sexual in nature or deemed inappropriate by staff, you will be asked to change. Sexual acts or any such attempted acts depicted by cosplayers will not be tolerated both on stage and around the venue. Supanova reserves the right to remove you from the venue at anytime should you not comply with requests by staff.

  3. If you are wearing very short skirts please wear shorts under skirts for cosplay.

  4. Weapons Policy - Please click here to view the Weapons policy.

  5. If you plan on doing a short skit/role play when you come on stage, please let the staff know when you are registering, along with a rough estimation of how long the skit will be.
Skits MUST NOT exceed 2 minutes. If your skit goes for longer than 2 minutes, it will be stopped abruptly. This will be strictly enforced. We will try to give you as much warning as possible.
There is an upper cap of 60 minutes for skits on Saturday, and 30 minutes for skits on Sunday. Please note that if you are performing a skit on Sunday, you will not be questioned by the MC. No more skits will be accepted after these times are filled, so please register early.

  6. You may submit a CD with tracks to be used for a skit, however please record your required skit onto either one track or tracks that you have divided yourself. We will not be able to skip tracks to accommodate your needs. Please also do not put tracks which are not related to your skit onto the CD. This needs to be done by you or your group prior to the event. If you have a lot of people speaking, we also recommend that you pre-record your dialogue this allows for the entire audience to hear your skit clearly and avoids microphone problems. Tracks must be in an audio CD format only. No MP3s. Please ensure that you keep to the indicated time limit of 2 minutes. Any longer and we will stop the CD without warning.

Please do not interact with the emcee. We prohibit any involvement with the emcee in your skit. We also prohibit any emcee dialogue during your performance.

Visual Aids - We will now allow the use of videos in the background if you wish to do so. Content appropriateness must be in line with Supanova screening guidelines (no nudity, nothing too over the top violent, nothing overtly sexual in nature).

  1. Safety first. We do not recommend jumping onto or off of the stage, performing acrobatics (including cartwheels or handsprings). Supanova accepts no responsibilities for any injuries caused if you choose to perform any sort of fight, or acrobatic sequences. Live steel, replica swords as well as any sharp AND OR replica weapons including replica guns are strictly forbidden under state and federal law. DO NOT BRING THEM!

  2. No fire, flash powder, lasers, explosives, smoke, or open flame of any kind will be allowed. Electronic flashes will be permitted provided that you notify the Anime Director in advance, and it must be announced in your MC introduction to protect those who may be affected by the flashing lights.

  3. No messy substances that might ruin the costume of another contestant will be allowed. If you are wearing body paint or make-up, please make sure it will not come off in casual contact with others. Do not leave anything on-stage that cannot be picked up by the stage ninjas within a few seconds.

  4. Feel free to surprise the audience and judges, but not the Supanova Team. If you are planning something "different", please let us know in advance we will keep all skits and costume plans strictly confidential. Please do not rush to the stage for ANY reason. If your actions are deemed reckless and dangerous you will be disqualified from the contest and escorted off the premises. Inappropriate behaviour on and off stage will result in both your disqualification from the contest and you may be subject to ejection from the event without refund.

  5. Judging will be based on accuracy of costume, ability to Role-play character as well as general attitude. Contestants should be advised that the Judges and the MC may have questions for the contestants to answer in character so come prepared. The Judges' decision is final. Contestants should also note that they will be asked to pose after their question session for approximately 10 seconds for photo opportunities.

  6. Although there are prizes for this event, please remember that we are all here to have fun. Please enjoy yourselves and don't do things that may ruin other attendee's rights to have a good safe enjoyable time. Failure to do so will result in you being escorted off the premises.

  7. Prizes are not exchangeable and are final; please do NOT take your prizes to the sponsor's booth to exchange as it will not be allowed. Prizes for the group entries will be provided for up to 5 people in the group.

We at Supanova can't wait to be dazzled by your costumes. It's going to be awesome.
