Supanova Pop Culture Expo officially opens its doors at 1PM on Friday November 4 for D-Day, celebrating the work of creators of ‘genre’ and pop-culture screen productions (sci-fi, fantasy, superhero, blockbuster, thriller, horror, anime, etc). Nearly four hours of specialty panel programming are offered, plus it’s also an opportunity for keen patrons to get a sneak preview of the expo’s trading floor! It’s open to D-Day ticket holders and weekend pass holders from 1pm – 7pm, (leading into Supanova’s official ‘Welcoming Ceremony’ at 6pm, as the expo’s trading floor draws to a close).

Whether you’re an ambitious fan, an emerging artist or a screen industry pro, come along to D-Day and find out from the creators exactly how these great productions are made! Here’s “What’s On” on D-Day…

1:40 PM — VAL KILMER on DIRECTORS AND DIRECTING: Hollywood actor Val Kilmer has been directed by some of the industry’s finest: Oliver Stone (in ALEXANDER and THE DOORS), Ron Howard (in THE MISSING), Tony Scott (TRUE ROMANCE and TOP GUN), Shane Black (KISS KISS, BANG BANG), Phil Noyce (THE SAINT), Ed Harris (POLLOCK), Michael Mann (HEAT), and many more. Now, as he prepares to direct his own first feature, entitled MARK TWAIN AND MARY BAKER EDDY (in which he also appears as Mark Twain), Val shares with us some priceless behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and observations on directors and directing.

2:30 PM — WARCO: Morgan Jaffit of Defiant Development is working with director Robert Connolly and journalist Tony Maniaty on WARCO – a brand-new console game (still in development!) about war correspondents. This is a First-Person Shooter with a twist: the player shoots film, not people! Set in the fictional country of Benouja, playing as journalist Jesse DeMarco, players must record dramatic images of conflict, save them in-game, and then edit the results into a compelling frontline TV news story before uploading the results to the web. Hear from Morgan Jaffit about how to shoot stories, not the enemy, in this cool and innovative new game.

3:20 PM — SHOW ME THE MAGIC: Go behind the scenes of the Hollywood blockbuster WOLVERINE with Cathy Henkel, director of SHOW ME THE MAGIC, a new documentary about veteran cinematographer Don McAlpine, a living legend. WOLVERINE was Don’s 50^th film in an impressive lineup that runs from MRS DOUBTFIRE to PREDATOR. In Cathy’s documentary about Don, we’ll see some of his personal on-set ‘home movies’ for the very first time. Get in early for a delicious sneak peek!

4:10 PM — SUSHI TYPHOON! Yoshihiro Nishimura is a legendary director and maestro of gore special effects for Sushi Typhoon, the hot new ‘genre film’ subsidiary of Japan’s oldest movie studio, Nikkatsu Corporation. Sushi Typhoon was founded in 2010 with the mandate of creating low-budget horror, science fiction and fantasy films for an international audience. Yoshihiro Nishimura started out creating stunningly dramatic and creative special and makeup effects for films such as SUICIDE CLUB, MEATBALL MACHINE and THE MACHINE GIRL. Their content might be controversial, but Nishimura san’s innovations are inarguably brilliant. For his first feature as director, TOKYO GORE POLICE, Nishimura san co-wrote the screenplay, directed the movie, did the special make-up effects and modeling, and appeared in a cameo!

On D-day, Yoshihiro Nishimura appears with his friend and translator, Marc Walkow, who is co-director of the New York Asian Film Festival and heads Sushi Typhoon’s American division. Later on Friday night, following Supanova’s Preview Night festivities (from 6PM), fans can attend a special Brisbane International Film Festival screening of Nishimura san’s over-the-top zombie apocalypse gorefest, HELLDRIVER! He will personally introduce the film, which screens at the Tribal at midnight.

He can be our wingman anytime, but for now he will be joining us in Brisbane November 5 & 6 and then in Melbourne for a single day event with Christopher Lloyd the following week. For more information on this event check out the Back to the Future With Supanova page here.

We are also pleased to welcome our replacement for Erica Durance, CASSIDY FREEMAN, who portrays ‘Tess Mercer’, the acting CEO of LuthorCorp in Smallville. Hand-picked by ‘Lex Luthor’ to manage his empire should he ever meet with misadventure, Tess has complex and conflicted relationships with the series’ villains and heroes. Cassidy has also appeared in CSI, The Playboy Club,  Longmire and the feature Yellowbrickroad.

To round out our “Trio of Wonderful” we say a huge ‘Hello!’ to GEORGINA LEONIDAS, who joins us in place of Scarlett Byrne, who has already flown off to film a role she was offered and therefore suddenly unable to join us. Georgina plays the unlucky Griffindor, ‘Katie Bell’, in the last three Harry Potter films. Her character is best remembered for accidentally receiving a curse intended for Dumbledoor, to horrific result.

Georgina and Cassidy will both at Supanova in Brisbane Saturday and Sunday while Val Kilmer will also be joining fans Melbourne November 12th.

Participating in the MNCC has pushed us, challenged us and rewarded us in ways we’ve never expected. It’s been something that has encouraged us to attempt to create things we’ve only dreamt of making before, and to get up on stage and show exactly how courageous (and fabulous?) we really are. We both feel madman has pushed us to the limit and it is truly an honour to have been offered the chance to go even further. We’re very excited about just being able to take part in such a large cosplay event, alongside some of Australia’s best cosplayers. Several other finalists are good friends of ours, and the November lineup is looking to be truly spectacular (and really intimidating! *_*).

Despite our relatively short history in the cosplay world with only a few years of experience, we decided to give the MNCC a shot this year after being greatly inspired by the magnificence of last year’s finalists. We hope to do something similar this year, and give everyone a performance to be remembered, something that will make you sit back and think, “wow, I want to be up there.” It’s going to be a great competition, and we’re really looking forward to it!

This is one of those times when we’re sorry to be the bearers of good news:

‘Thor’ actress Jaimie Alexander has just scored a starring role opposite Arnold “The Governator” Schwarzenegger in his comeback film, ‘The Last Stand’. Jaimie plays cop Sarah Torrance in the film, which starts shooting in New Mexico on precisely the same day as our Brisbane show, and therefore she has had to postpone her appearance. We’re sorry that this news will disappoint her fans, but we hope you will join us in wishing Jaimie well in this very exciting role… and we blame Arnie!

Arnie’s middle name is “Alois”, and we’re also sorry to report that we have to postpone “a Lois” as well – Smallville’s Erica Durance (Lois Lane) can no longer make an appearance at Supanova and sends her sincerest apologies along with the hope that she’ll see us very soon. We’re sorry to let down Erica’s fans, and we’ll work hard to bring her to Australia just as soon as we can.

One postponement that can’t be blamed on The Governator, but we’re going to anyway, is that of Harry Potter star Scarlett Byrne. Scarlett, who appeared in the hit franchise as Hogwarts’ student Pansy Parkinson, has just booked a movie role and therefore has had to cancel her trip as well.

As is always the case, we are now casting our Supa-net far and wide to find suitable replacements for Erica, Jaimie and Scarlett in time for Brisbane Supanova, and will be making announcements as soon as the ink is dry on any new contracts.

We are very pleased to announce Erica Durance as the latest Supa-Star heading to Brisbane this November. Erica has literally shot to fame as the sassy and sexy ‘Lois Lane’ from SMALLVILLE !  She will also soon be appearing in the new series of CHARLIE’S ANGELS with Aussie Rachael Taylor!

In more good news we welcome back, for the first time after her postponement in April, the wonderful Julie Benz, whose amazing credits include DEXTER, NO ORDINARY FAMILY, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and the fan favourite BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER to name just a few.

To prove that good things come in multiples we’re pleased as punch to bring you the lovely Renee O’Connor, best known for playing Xena’s sidekick ‘Gabrielle’ between 1996 and 2001 in the epic fantasy series XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS!

Speaking of warrior princesses how about warrior goddesses? That’s right, Supanova is hosting one of them too when the stunning Jaimie Alexander descends Downunder having portrayed ‘Sif’ in THOR. Jaimie is no stranger to genre entertainment though after having starred in KYLE XY as well.

It doesn’t end there either as we’re still feeling quite magical in announcing the quirky and absolutely awesome, Evanna Lynch, whose ‘Luna Lovegood’ is a fan-favourite amongst the HARRY POTTER faithful.

But wait, there’s more, with the Slytherin’ girlfriend of ‘Draco Malfoy’ herself, ‘Pansy Parkinson’, appearing! Yes, Scarlett Byrne is coming on down from HARRY POTTER too!

Finally we have the talented Teryl Rothery whose fans are spread out over a number of franchises and genres including voice-acting (‘Mai’ from DRAGONBALL Z). But for most fans, much as they like her in roles ranging from KYLE XY, CAPRICA, JEREMIAH and more, it’s as ‘Dr. Janet Fraiser’ from STARGATE SG-1 that most of her followers are built from.

We’re so very excited to be hosting so many wonderfully talented women of sci-fi and fantasy, from both the big screen and small, as we rev up to our biggest and best Brisbane expo ever as we say, “Bring on November!!!”

More fantastic news as, thanks to Zombster, the Official Brisbane Qualifying Round of the Bandai GunPla Builders World Cup is coming to Supanova in Brisbane, November 4 to 6. Winners of the competition will have their model kits entered into the 2012 Australian finals held in Sydney.

GunPla (Gundam Plastic) models are an international hobby sensation that started over 30 years ago with the initial Mobile Suit Gundam anime series. Over the years GunPla has evolved to become an interesting model kit experience with no paint or glue being required to put these marvels of engineering together.  GunPla hobby enthusiasts also enjoy adding custom paint jobs and modifications to create their own unique works of art.  Bandai GunPla Builders World Cup challenges these hobbyists to bring their works of art forward and have them showcased for all to appreciate.

The Bandai GunPla Builders World Cup brings together the finest works from each participating country around the world in one world cup event in Hong Kong each year.  Australia joined the international circuit last year with its first event at SMASH in Sydney.  Now set to be the stage for the Australian finals, cities all over Australia have been organizing to send their state’s representative to the Australian finals for a chance at international glory.  Zombster is pleased to announce that it will be bringing the Brisbane Qualifier to Supanova Brisbane.

There will be two categories for entry into the competition – Standard and Advanced.

• The Standard Category is for all of the “out-of-box” builds, which allows for custom paint jobs, but no modifications or dioramas.  Awards will be given out for the Best 1/100 or Greater Scale, Best 1/144 Scale, Best SD (Super Deformed), Best Junior Class (ages 14 and under) and People’s Choice for Best Standard.
• The Advanced Category is the masterclass of the competition.  Modifications are highly recommended as are custom built dioramas.  Instead of awards by scale, the best three are awarded First, Second and Third place.  Matching awards are given to the Junior Class (ages 14 and under).  There is also the People’s Choice for Best Advanced.

The most important regulation in the competition is that an Official Bandai GunPla model kit must be used.

People’s Choice voting will start Saturday 10 AM and when the doors close at 6 PM.  So it is essential that all entries are in by closing on Friday night, 7 PM sharp.  Votes will be counted and the winners will be announced during the Award Ceremony Sunday afternoon.  All other awards will be judged by an anonymous group of judges during the weekend.

Artists, modellers, hobbyists, anime fans, the challenge is on.

Bandai was founded in 1950 as a manufacturer of toys and models.  It started producing GunPla model kits in 1980 after the success of their anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam.  Since then Bandai has expanded the range across many scales and grades.  To honour the GunPla 30th anniversary, it built the famous 1:1 scale RX-78-2 Gundam in Japan that was on show for a limited time in Tokyo and Shizuoka.  They have yet to produce a purchasable model kit of this in 1:1 scale.

And we must be doing something right as our April 2011 tour saw our Brisbane and Melbourne attendances rise to 23,400 and 14,400 respectively versus 19,700 and 10,200 last year. Sydney and Perth’s 2011 attendances a little later in June emphasised this when 22,600 and 17,500 turned up compared to 16,400 and 12,200 in 2010.

Combined that was a whopping 77,900 fans in 2011 compared to 58,500 in 2010 or a rise of 33% in one year. Or more than double our overall 2008 audience of 38,500.

Further our online community has risen to 24,500 fans on Facebook and 3,500 on Twitter that we’re able to share news, info, comps and cool stuff with throughout the year, not just during the expos.

Yet, even now as we embark on our November schedule that includes a repeat visit to Brisbane, November 4-6, and our one-day special event featuring Christopher Lloyd in Melbourne, November 12th, we often get asked, “what is the Supanova Pop Culture Expo?”

Here then is our answer; a video that seeks to explain something that nearly 78,000 fans have already experienced this year alone…
